What is the best stepping for the E8400 and are there any other considerations with selecting the the most overclockable one?

E0 and no, each chip is unique so theres no hard and fast rule, some report certain batches to be particuarly good but it could be quite hard to find out which batches and then try and get your hands on that specific one
With regards stepping later revisions are better than earlier, so E>D>C>B>A etc

I picked one up from OCuk (edit: same as below) but am having great results with it. Limited by my board, but at 3.7GHz I'm getting load temps maxed at 45 with IBT, so lots of headroom.

E0's are generally best, but don't discount the older ones if buying 2nd hand though, my C0 revision maxes out on my mobo at 4.5ghz, maxed out memory sadly, but previous owner had it upto 4.9ghz under phase, and he was mobo limited too.

If buying new then yeh aim for E0 stepping, but no matter what stepping its just luck as to if u get a pig or a beast of a clocker. But as it was said the newer revisions are generally better, but old ones can still be just as good or better if ur lucky :D

Ive got the E0 and went straight to 4ghz never pushed it any further as 4ghz is a nice round number and it performs well like that anyway.

Make a thread then get moaned at For making another one up, all I asked was s simple question never mind ill have a. Look round the net.

Jabbs to answer ur question, you would'nt see any difference from an E8 series cpu over ur cpu for gaming.

More and more games are slowly starting to be optimized for quadcore cpu's, and also any modern cpu over 3ghz won't be a bottle neck.

I run my E8400 @ 3.6ghz at stock volts, and personally don't see any difference over it being at 3ghz, in most games, so realisticly 4ghz would'nt add tha much fps, id personally stay with what you have.

If you where to change cpu, i would'nt advise going down to dul core, more like going upto the Q9's.

Off Topic:

never mind.
Oh cmon Jabbs don't sulk now! :p

Am after a cpu for better gaming performance currently have a [email protected] and can't seem to get much more out of it stable, would i get a good difference going to one of these.
Assuming you have no spent no time reading the gaziilions of similar topics in this forum (Quad vs Dual) (Best CPU for gaming) etc I can tell you your gonna get a ton of people saying one thing and a ton of people saying the opposite, the dual core owners will say how a 4GHz is best . . . that will get quad core owners back up, a big fight will take place and you will be left covered in forum blood and still scratching your head!

As your such an old school legend I would be happy to help attempt squeezing some more MHz from your current system, seriously I'm here to help but I'm also attempting to get these forums a bit more ship shape as a technical resource also and it's become obvious to me that a lot of threads are ruined by hijacking, going off topic, uneeded quoting etc, this results in a thread swelling from say 100 posts to a 1000 posts and it's horrible to read, half the posts have nothing to do with the topic so again the forum is diminished as a technical resource! :(

Too many threads to read just wanted a quick reply rather than look through 100's of threads, i was sending from my htc hero and it was too much hassle to try looking about, from the 2 responses think i will keep what i have and save up for a new i5 system in a few months.

Yeh thats gonna be ur best bet, is I5/I7.

Can't knock the E8's personally they do all i ever need, but they are abit old tech compared to the newer stuff lol.

I'd hope to see a price slash on the LGA775 dual cores soon, at present I feel they are overpriced . . .

IMHO No LGA775 chip (bar maybe extreme editions) are worth over £100 . . .
