Doing a search for my own threads it seems I've never started one praising an artist so here goes -

Steve Vai's words on this guy: "It's always funny to me when people use the phrase, Best guitar player in the world. There are too many variables such as technique, uniqueness, emotional investment in the notes, etc. But If I had to pick one, it would be Tommy Emmanuel. Watching him perform can be a study in artistic and virtuosic human achievement."

I know he's been mentioned on here before and Naffa went to see him and had a picture taken with him. I've just recently acquired an AVI of him doing a concert at Sheldon Hall and I've bought two proper DVD releases one of which is a tuition DVD called Up Close. The guy is amazing and funny and I thank the people who first mentioned him in these forums. I can't get enough of him at the moment.

Yup, at first I didn't think he'd be my cup of tea, but a few mates persuaded me to go and see him with them. All I can say is wow, his technical skills are just amazing.

Yep Yep! Top guy! And very funny if you ever get to talk to him in person. The first time I went to see him I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and when I came out I was blown away! And I also felt reduced to the guitar playing level of a 5 year old!

If you get to chance to see Tommy live do everything you can to get there!

will have to check him out

may i recommend also Marc Ribot to anyone in the london area as hes doing a free improv gig on the southbank in june as part of meltdown, and hes amazing

Fantastic.

I'm seeing him on the 5th in Bristol, I can't wait. :D It'll be the sixth time I've seen him and I'm anticipating this more than any of the other times. Damn, I'd love to be doing support for him. :(

Holy thread revival . He is indeed an absolutely amazing musician and entertainer, seen him live 6 or 7 times now. Seeing initiation live is just an incredible experience. Probably won't get to see him this year though, not many UK dates :(

Just got in, bloody awesome

That was so weird... I was just browsing some old threads and all of a sudden thought "I'm going to look for that thread on Tommy as I'm going to see him on Saturday" and this appears!

How was it?

Amazing and I stood 10 foot away and to the left of him so I saw everything.
I even shook his hand outside.
He was on for 2hr 20mins and got his support act (Rick?) on with him at the end doing Everly Bros, Elvis & Roy Orbison.
He had an old dude from Tennessee called John Knowles do 3 tunes with him.
I can die happy now.

Off to bed.

Oh my lord... John Knowles was there?! Holy **** is all I can say and I will give Tommy my left nut if John Knowles is there when I see him.
John Knowles was another C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player, the award given by Chet Atkins) along with Tommy and Jerry Reed.

Rick Price was the support I believe, he is very good but not really my sort of thing.

Glad you enjoyed it!
