Just with it being so cheap. Neither game needed a cd key to install which i find strange.

I am a few hours into Oblivion and well.... it's very dull. It surely gets better, but I don't hold out much hope for the combat system which just seems to be a case of hit>run>hit>run>heal while running>hit>heal>run>heal.... repeat for every mob.

Could be worse. Imagine if those issues had popped up on the console versions! I've not run across too many people with the resolution issue, maybe you're just unlucky?
Oblivion is an adventure game with some RPG elements, and not a hack'n'slash. If you were expecting combos and finishing moves, you bought the wrong game. Personally I think the combat system works exactly as it should: you control it, but your chances of success are down to the development of your character, not to your reflexes. The whole point of RPGs.
