Ive previously posted about wanting a quiet graphics upgrade to my existing rig that getting on for 2years old:

- Q6600 (go stepping)
- ASUS P5KC iP35 motherboard
- 4GB Ram
- Antec TruePower Trio 650W PSU
- 8800GT (Zalaman fan edition)
- CoolerMaster cosmos case
- 22" samsung panel LCD

I play a selection of games (DOW2, DragonAge, Crysis mostly at the moment) at 1680x1050 resolution and then as much AA as I can. I want to continue running latest games at a pretty standard for another 18m - 2 years, at which point I'll probably do a full upgrade of CPU, motherboard, etc. My preference was for a quiet GPU, so I was going to wait for the 5850 vapox-X to come out & then benefit from DX11.

HOWEVER...

My graphics card budget is £150, but I would stretch to around the £200 mark if there was a good reason. Now having a look a month or so later, I find that 5850's are out of my extended price range (even if you CAN get hold of one!) and thats not even the vapors.

But, I have now seen the 5770's available at a great price & started to wonder if this is a better weapon of choice for me, considering my standard resolution and other kit??? (and would it be man enough for another 18months?).

Also, anyone know if my MB will crossfire? (I know it technically supports it, but not sure if Ive got more than one big PCI-e port). If it would, then I guess a 5770 now, plus another in 8months would be ideal, but I think probably not.

OR, should I just sit in the queue for 5850's for another few months to see if they drop in price?

Many Thanks
Dan

You could consider getting a HD4890.More powerful than the HD5770 but takes more power and gets really hot but this can be solved if you buy one with a custom cooler the one from VTX or Asus. But i would say to wait a bit and get the HD5850.Your motherboard can do Xfire but at x8-x8.But if you want to go Xfire with 2xHD5770s you'll need to overclock that Q6600 to at least 3.5-3.6 to give the cards some room to breath.

an 8800GT still isnt a bad card tbh , wait and save up for the 5850 then you are set for some time .... i think if you went for a 5770 you would be dissapointed in performance (the jump to 5850 is noticable) and if u went for a 4890 you would be stuck feeling a bit left out with every1 hitting dx11 in a few months .

I jumped from 8800gt to a gtx 260-216 a few months ago, was a decent boost in performance

Remember Crysis and GTA4 prefer Nvidia cards

I played GTA 4 on HD4870 and GTX 260 using the same system and I have seen very little difference. The GTX getting 2-3 more fps and the HD4870 got 5 more in Crysis.

Crysis is faster on ATI cards, and have been for a while. The 4870 out performs the GTX260 216, and the 4890 out performs the GTX 275.

tbh i dont think the fact that certain cards might gain 3-4 fps over each other on different games should be a deciding factor on the purchase ... i think the fact that the 5850 is the more powerful card should be more important.

I would not trust any benchmark scores that shows the 4870x2 below a GTX 260 that just shows there incompetent in setting it up right.
