RMA'ing my EVGA 8800 GTX SLI cards and just got informed that the 8800 gtx is out of stock so i'l probably get the 250 GTS instead.

Now i'm quite out of the loop so have no idea if it's better or not just cause it's newer. Am running at 1920 x 1200 resolution and the cards will be in SLI.

So is it better, worse, or the same?

Thanks :)

The GTS 250 specs look about the same as the 9800GTX specs

The GTS 250 should be a little faster then the 8800gtx due to the much higher core speed..

(But the GTS 250 lower 256-bit memory Interface may hold it back at high res with AA)

That's because the 250 is just a 9800 with a different sticker ;)

At 1920*1200 the cards will perform very similar. The 250 has the faster chip, but as chaparral said, it will be a little bottlenecked at times due to the reduction in bandwidth.

Ok, so basically send back the card and hope that a 1gb card comes in return. I'l send it off and tell them that i'm expecting the 1gb in return then.

Just in case its not, how much of a downgrade is the 512 version in SLI?

ive got the 8800gts 512 which is the same as the gts 250 only with 512mb of vram and lower clocked speeds on the 65nm gpu. So far it handles anything i throw at it, except crysis maxed out obviously, so a definate step up if they send you the 1gb version.

Which is an 8800 with a new sticker!

As for what card you get back, I've heard of people getting GTX260-285s back, maybe they were BFG cards, I don't know.

I personally wouldn't accept a GTS250 back though. Same specs or better, not lower.

GTS 250 should be around the same performance....a little slower at high res due to the narrower memory bus. But given that they aren't making 8800GTXs anymore, a 250 is the closest you're gonna get.

They should send something better than a GTS250; the 8800GTX was a monster in its day; top dog and the GTS250 is just a constantly rebranded 8800gts 512; (9800gtx -->9800gtx+--->) okay smaller die, lower temps and a bit faster.
I'm pretty certain a G80 and G92 won't SLI btw.

Your biggest problem is going to be trying to SLI the GTS with the GTX.

Have you let them know that the card you are sending ack is one of an SLI pair?

Actually just read it again and you said you are RMA'ing your SLI cards

So I assume you are getting two GTS250's back?

If so then I'd say you don't have much to complain about if their policy is to replace like for like on a performance level which might be EVGA's policy.

I think BFG replace with the equivalent model in the the new range, so thats why some ppl are getting GTX2*'s

Yea, RMA'ing both cards. One of them (just sent it off again today after some problems with EVGA) won't even let me run windows and the other one, which is what the computer is running on currently, will run windows and videos fine and just arifacts like crazy in games. It used to allow me to play games as well with artifacting going away after minimizing and maximizing but now just goes crazy so decided to quit games until it gets replaced.

Anyway, so yes, I assume I will get two GTS 250's back. Will make as much clear that that's what I expect in the cover letter when the other one comes back and I send this off.

Their policy is that they will replace like for like on performance which i'm perfectly fine with. Just wanted to confirm that that is what i'm getting and not getting lesser performance under a new shiny name :)
