Suggestions for cars £900-£1500

Why would someone who owns an M5 want a 1.6 Golf? It would be like a Muslim cooking some pork chops.

Hmmm...very suspect.

Cheap runabout apparenty.

Question is, why would someone who can afford to run an M5 want a cheap runabout? It's not like its exactly an impractical/unfomfortable B road blaster that you'd keep locked up for weekends

Mayb he doesn't want to burden it with the stonechips, car park dings, general idiot drivers and wear and tear that appears on high mileage 'high performance' cars, all whist saving money on running costs in the process?

It's not far fetched by any stretch of the imagination.

I get all that. I'd consider the same. The bit I dont get is to have such a car, care so much about it and consider it so important that you'd buy another car to keep it nice, bring it up on an internet forum about cars and then NOT wish to discuss your pride and joy with likeminded enthusiasts. It doesn't add up, just seems a shame really.

People who are passionate about something rarely want to keep it to themselves which is why it's so easy to strike up conversations with exotic car owners at petrolstations etc - they just love to talk about their cars, because they are really keen on them.

It's what we are all here for, surely?

You'd have to anal to own a M5 (presumably an E39) and be afraid to drive it because you're afraid of getting stone chips on it.

If its an E60 M5, not in a billion years would you spend that amount of money on a car and then not be able to afford anything more than a 1.6 banger Golf.

And if you buy a banger 1.6 Golf because of the extra running cost of say a 1.8T or V5 over a 1.6 makes no sense either when you're running 2 cars, with 2 x insurance, 2 x servicing, 2 x parts and have a depreciating M5 in the garage. You don't buy an M5 to drive a banger most of the time.

The mindset of an M5 owner simply isn't the mindset of a banger 1.6 Golf owner.

Mate of mine who used to have an 39 M5 and a 156 Sportwagon as a runabout wouldn't be seen dead driving a 1.6 banger Golf.

Maybe if you were blessed with the information regarding both the golf and the M5 you would be able to voice an informed opinion.

You obviously didn't read the thread i started yesterday, which Fox and mondeoman managed to hijack and turn into a ford mondeo love-in.

Just for you I will explain the thinking....

Bought a 2000 plate 1.6se golf to drive over the winter while my M5 is having some TLC given to the wheels and bonnet. The golf is a 2 owner, 55000 mile, FVWSH example and it cost me a ridiculously low 1700 to buy.

Once the M5 is back in one piece the golf will be sold at a vastly inflated price which should cover the costs of all the work being done to the M5..

Pretty straight forward really. Don't see why there is such a debate about it. Well other than the fact that i said mondeo's and focii are crap..

Why dont you go back and read your thread again? I never mentioned the Ford Mondeo once in that thread. Infact if anything, though I wasn't sure I understood the rationale behind caring about insurance at your age, I was actually supporting the concept of buying a Golf and was one of the few people to actually answer your question and say that £1700 for the Golf was very much worth it.

It's only after you started getting funny about Fords it all went a bit down hill.

I do find it interesting that you realise you will sell the Golf for more than you paid for it. Thats kinda like an admission that 1700 quid isnt really the going rate for an X reg Golf and you got a rather good deal. Which was my point in this thread - an X reg Golf is a good car, but one that normally costs a lot more than 1500 quid in decent condition.

So, this M5. Tell us more! I'll be especially jealous if its Estoril Blue.

 It had already kicked off by the time I explained my point of view, so dont try blamimg me

So you bought a banger Golf to drive over the next 3 months because you don't want to get possible snow and road salt on it, and make a few quid in the process?

What on earth is the point of having an M5 in the first place then? As Forrest Gump once said, "Stupid is as stupid does....."

are you thick?

There are no wheels on it.. how am i going to manage to drive it with no wheels?

The estimated time for getting the wheels done is 6-10 weeks depending on how busy the guy is.

10 weeks to refurbish some alloys? Surely worth just whacking a set of 16's on it if they are away for that long, 100 quid off the bay, tops. Thought a set of 17's might be needed as I'm not sure the 345mm front discs on an M5 would fit under the 16's - they are a tight fit on a 530/540 and they are 20mm smaller.

Why didn't you send them to Lepsons? They are reknowned as probably the best in the business and one of the few places that can actually get the Shadow Chrome finish on the E39 M5 wheels right.

Ok thanks for the replies, in brief seeing as I'm at work and not going to quote here:

I've thought about toledo's and like them, but most are far above a couple of thou. though not saying all and there's a few i may take a look at.

Leon I've seen is for £2000 and it's local and should get round to looking at soon.

Reason for not wanting a mondeo is the fact I don't need such a big car and don't do motorway driving, as good as they're & reliable (my Dad's had one), it's not a real requirement for me at the mo. I've had a laguna so would prefer something a little smaller & Omega's (disregarding the smaller car statement) I would get one straight away if the insurance wasn't so high.

Toledos should be cheaper than leons (look at the one i linked to) - just might take a bit more finding :)

I agree, I drove a Mondeo and it was so big I found it almost impossible to park or negotiate tight situations.

I live down a narrow lane - I regularly get wedged and need to free myself using butter and vaseline

I often spend up to 4 hours driving around city centres because my car is just so huge it wont park anywhere or fit down most roads.
