With the i7s and i5s out, I honestly don't see why anyone wold go with this :P, apart from saving a bit of money on mobo and ram of course.

For new no - but its a good way to top up an LGA775 system and performance will be good enough to last out this generation of CPUs.

Do you think Im mad to consider this - really wanting to get rid of my E5200 as I percieved it to be the weakest link in my system. The problem is that I havent really o/ced it and I dont use my PC as much as I used to since getting a PS3.

Just seems a waste when I have a GTX280 in there and Steam seduced me recently :(. Also picked up Win 7 too :p

Id consider a platform change but its always gonna be more than ~£200 for the same performance and Ive always looked to get decent components where possible so no doubt overspend...

ps3ud0

tastes like fried chicken.. tempted by this but i have a P43 chipset motherboard so i might as well get a core I5 :<

This chip is way too exspensive im in another country rite now and this chip here is £126 and retail also.

That's more like the price they should be and maybe this price for the Q9650, i will hold on i think and see what happens in the new year.

if its around the 130-140 mark then itd be fine. but not 170, still a lot of money for a last gen part.

I spent £200 on a workstation class mb so i went for it from an e6700, but i got the xeon version for £5 more LoL.

Just seems a waste to upgrade my MB and Ram for i5/i7, when i was only just being limited by my cpu.

Ah... Sell my Q6600 for £90 and get this for £80? Is it worth the boost?

Think its generally accepted to be a small step from an overclocked Q6600. Performs about 200mhz better, so if you got it to 3.4GHz it would be like your 3.6GHz Q6600. I dont think its worth the money straight up, but if you dont intend to change mobo/ram anytime soon and want something to play with then it might be worthwhile ;)

Depends what your doing... I straight swapped a Q6600 @ 3.6gig to a Q9550 clocked at 3.825gig - not a massive CPU MHz increase - but the opening scene in 3D Marks 06 in the landing craft jumped from 80 to 120fps. And extracting large multi part RAR files is massively faster - tho some stuff obviously isn't noticeably quicker.

The difference for me going from a 3.8ghz q6600 to a q9550 (at 3.8ghz also) was pretty small. Though it did run a lot cooler, i basically got one to give it a try, fantastic chip all the same but theyre still a bit expensive new.

That 12MB L2 Cache makes a big difference in many games & even bigger difference in apps which can make use of it as 12Mb holds a lot of instructions in the cache before flushing.

I don't think the upgrade from a Q6600 is worth it though.

On paper and in benchies it will be faster.

If there where 2 PC's the same side by side.In the real world I doubt any of us could guess which one was running the the Q6600 and which one was running the 12MB cache 45 nm part at the same clock speed.
