When selling a console, is it risky to send the receipt?

Hi all,

If I was to sell a brand new games console at auction, but the receipt for it is

a) in my name and
b) has details printed on it of other items I bought for myself from the shop,

Can you think of any problems there would be with sending a photocopy of the receipt?

Thanks in advance! :)

Only problem I can see is if there are any personal details of yours on the receipt such as CC or DC numbers. I would keep the original for yourself to cover any items you bought and send a photo-copy of receipt for item he is buying from you. Make sure you blank out any personal details such as I've mentioned above and should be okay.

He will have copy to see its genuine, if a problem arises with the item then shop should accept the copy but if not you can always forward the original one at that point. If you include a small note to explain why you've done it this way I can't see him/her having a problem. :)

Thanks for the sensible replies.

I did intend that i'd send a photocopy rather than the original, but I was more wondering about whether there was any funny business they could try with my other items on the reciept that i've kept (one is an expensive new TV).

I wouldn't have thought so but I can't think....

Just send the receipt as a photocopy with any parts you don't want shown blanked out. It won't make any difference to the shop because the receipt on their system will come up as normal and the physical receipt means very little. It's only there as a proof of purchase, if it shows the shop details, the item and a date then that's generally enough.

That sounds like a good idea SKaRT thanks. Do you think I could get away with blanking out the price of the item? :P

He didn't mention, you did. You asked if it was a problem that the receipt had your name on it.

I meant is it a problem that the person potentially taking the item back to the shop for a warranty repair (if it needs one) is not me.

Ahh right right. Don't think it should be. If its a 360 then the warranty repairs are done over the internet through the 360's serial number, so the name isn't needed other than the return address (of course if it is a 360 you are selling then you will need to unregister it from your name if you have registered it online on Xbox.com). This is hypothetically of course if its a 360 :D.

You probably could, I would assume the purpose of the receipt is simply to show the buyer that it was purchased legally from a shop on whatever date it was. If so it won't matter what the receipt says other than the shop's details and the product itself.
