**The Dragon Age Origins Thread **

I'd stick with Mage tbh. If you don't really understand the mechanics, going mage is a pretty easy way to learn them for your party members without worrying about messing things up yourself.

For my first run through i went full Primal, ending quite a lot of fights during 'dungeons' by simply putting Earthquake and Inferno/Blizzard in the room with an optional Glyph of Repulsion in the doorway from Wynne. You'd be surprised how many fights that gets you through. Then of course theres Cone of Cold and anything that forces a crit to shatter, same with Petrify. When Zevran came along with full Dual Wield i found out just how much extra dps Flame Weapon adds.

Now i've installed the Dex hotfix i'm going through with 2 Rangers w/ 2 Pets and 2 Mages. Looking entertaining so far. Respecced Leliana to Ranger and Morrigan to Spirit Healer, i just need to find Wynne.

I'm going to go mage instead then, seems like a fun class. I should go full primal then? Going to put my first point in flame blast?

For those that dont know there are amazing armour sets for rogue and warrior that you can find throughout the game.

I wont completely spoil how to obtain them, just point you in the right direction:

Warrior Juggernaut Armour - While youre in the brecillian forest keep an eye out for gravestones though the chestpiece can be found inside the elven ruins further in after you perform a ritual. (You can also find the best bow in the game inside these ruins)

Rogue Drake Armour - For this you will need to obtain 6 drake scales, then head off to denerim market and find someone to craft them

For some of the best mage items head off to the wonders of thedas in the denerim market district.

Hope this helps!

I find mages rather dull , rogues f.tw imo :)

I always play as a rogue on my first play through of any RPG but the class is so badly realised in this game that I restarted.

The sneaking is poor, basically it's more akin to having invisibility spells...and the visual representation of this is unbelievably crap. I would have hoped for light based sneaking but unfortunately it seems really basic.

Lock picking is a simple calculation. I didn't play far into the game but never failed to open a chest. Not so important as the sneaking, but again...I would have hoped for something more.

I don't know if modding will help as I'm not sure what the toolset can achieve.

Ive found a dwarf that looks just like Barbara Streisand!

Bloody roffle indeed. Orzammar has one of my favourite quotes of the game - I woulda missed it if I hadn't decided to roll a cigarette at that time. After things are tied up and dealt with, one of the 'news of the hour' dudes references an event where a character makes some bad choices and winds up dead, and finishes the announcement with "Epic Fail!"

I still fail picking some locks with Lelianna (Two n's?) with it maxed. I believe it's affected by your Cunning level as well as the skill level. There aren't many locks I couldn't pick, but there were always a couple that gave the message "Insufficient skill"

I agree with Stealth not being very appealing in terms of visual. It is quite useful on the higher levels, especially if you mix it up with high level poisons, spell enchantments from your Mage and decent daggers on a dual wielding rogue. I've used it numerous times to sneak into rooms where a problematic target may be.

Stealth; poisons; Momentum; enchantments and Flurry equal a very surprising attack that is able to take down a high-value target in an area before you bring in the rest of your team to mop up the all the other targets.

Sneak and backstab should be a powerful tool. It should work as sneak though...not invisibility.

Really? That's strange. Does your character ever fail sneak?

If i get close to people, yes. Although, most of my talents and skills went into combat.

And God Damn the 4 character party size. God damn it to hell. I don't want to replace Alastair with Shale. Morrigan doesn't seem to actually do much either, but I want to keep a relationship.

Argh.

Well you can force it through console to give you more members... bit pointless though since the game is balanced for 4 man teams.

Yes Stealth is a bit basic... but how in gods name do you think a 'Thief' style Sneak would actually work in this game? Having to tailor every single explorable to allow dark areas that you could sneak through would be ridiculous and render Stealth nigh useless in most areas.

As for Lockpick, yeah its based on Cunning too, some locks need max lockpick and 35 Cunning. Not too much of a problem if your using a Dex/Cunning or Cunning focus build for your weapons.

So be it. Sneaking across the centre of a well lit room, that has enemies in it, is lame.

Would you have to tailor every area? I would have thought there could have be a light level/enemy presence check in the calculation of stealth.

Which would render it useless... You'd have to go far too in depth with the design of each area and mob to make it usable and frankly it just wouldn't pay off. Lets face it, stealth really isn't that useful aside from scouting as it is and making it more realistic so its more likely to fail would make it even less so.

In games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 i agree, Sneak done in this fashion is utterly stupid where it should really be done like in Thiefs style. It would be a great day in Oblivion if you could use an Ice spell to douse a torch or fire in dungeons, allowing Nightvision and Detect Life to REALLY be useful. But it wouldn't feel right in this game...

As Mage stats go. No, there's no point investing in anything else. Maybe a little constitution if you feel you need more hp and you didn't get enough after the Circle quest (i'd also avoid speccing Cunning so you can get Coercion/Survival until this too or you'll end up with too much). Thing is most of these are things you'd do on subsequent run throughs when your more familiar with the game and things in it.

I'm at the very end of the game now. On my 1st play threw with my Noble Warrior Champion. Wish me luck. :D I've done well over 90% of the side quests I'd say.
