hi

im trying to buy my dad a private plate as a present

what does it involve?

ive found one i want on a website...

so once i purchase it from there...then what happens...

as its present i dont want him to know about it...will the DVLA send him anything in the post or not..

do you have to change your tax disk/MOT/insurence Etc so it doesnt show the old registration

thanks for you help in advance

If it is from the DVLA it will have had the £80 assignment fee included in the price. If it is from elsewhere, you have to check, or may have to pay it at the DVLA office.

You can buy it, but nominate him as the plate holder so it can go on his car. Then it comes in the post on a bit of paper. Take this, plus the V5 of the vehicle in question to the DVLA office. And they will print you a new tax disc, and send you the V5 in the post.
They will give you a certificate which will allow you to get plates made up at a licensed place, or you can just get them made up on-line.

When you buy the plate you also chose a Nominee - this is your father. You then a Certificate of Entitlement through which has both your names on and can be placed on a car which either of you are the registered keeper of.

You'll need his driving license to get plates made up and its probably not a good idea to do the transfer without him knowing as he needs to notify his insurers etc.

Give the certificate in an envelope for Christmas.

DO NOT buy from anyone but the DVLA.

I thought you only needed the certificate thing, and the bit that DVLA give you, not necessarily the driving licence of the owner of the car.

You need the driving license of somebody named on the certificate, so I guess as the purchaser he'd be able to do that.

Don't start that conversation, I will wrap it up to save us all:

Person 1: The ones on-line are not legal
Person 2: Yes they are, they are no different
Person 1: you need the BSA mark or something
Person 2: You can get them
Person 1: No you can't
Person 3: You can scan and email off proof and get real plates.
Person 4: I prefer plates from the BMW main dealer, they say BMW on them, and hence are better.

LOL! Even the little one in the sub-line of text that identifies origin? I thought they banned the large logos that plebs put on the left margin where the Flag or EU identifier goes?

You can have the line of text but BMW dealers dont tend to have BMW in it. My new front plate (Some moron reversed into it in a carpark a week after I bought some with the logo on...) just says 'Ocean Plymouth' for example.

They dont any more since the government changed the law and banned manufacturer logos :(

And thank god the Govt. restored the taste factor on that little piece of nastiness.
Yes I know it's a BMW as A) anyone who gives a toss can recognise one from 50 yards away, B) it says so on the front/back with a nice blue and white badge and I'm assuming the owner already knows what manufacturer made his car.
License plate extras make it easy to spot people who try that little bit too hard.
