Router data rate versus actual download rate

My router is currently showing 12518Kb download rate. When I download anything the max speed I get is 1.3MB/sec. Unless I'm being stupid, should my max theoretical download speed me 12MB/sec?

Or is this a megabit/megabyte confusion on my part?

Theoretically yes, but due to bottlenecks on your ISP and BT's networks it may not always be that. Many people find that at busier times their download speeds drop, or it may be due to your ISP throttling download speeds, a lot of that going on these days.

It looks like it. 1.3MB/s = 10.4Mbps, so not bad for a 12Mbps sync (if you account for losing 12% of your sync rate to overheads, you're looking at 10.88Mbps of useful data).
