Hi there,

I got a speck of dirt on the focussing screen of my EOS 450d, so naively used a cotton swab in a attempt to remove it.

Unfortunately doing so has resulted in it becoming scratched, so I imagine a replacement will be on the cards.

I was thinking of using my local branch of London Camera Exchange to repair it for me. Are they any good and will they use a genuine canon part, or should I send it off to Canon?

Cheers

I did the same! As a guide my service repair at the big blue high street shop cost £120! I assume that the repair will use genuine parts as I haven't seen anyone selling replacement screens for that model. Obviously, if you are worried, then ask the LCE.

If you can get a focusing screen for the 450d then it's a 20 second job to swap them over. New focusing screens are around £20-35 I think. Could be a good time to change it for a precision screen or one with a grid if you fancied?

£120 seems a touch excessive for the repair to me but perhaps the 450d is different?

I don't think the 450D has user changable focussing screens. I've had a look at the system map at the rear of the Manual (which can be found here)for that Camera and it doesn't list changable screens. The system map can be found on pages 176 and 177 of that PDF. So it looks like a trip to the repairman for the OP.

It does.
