Best PC shooters of the past 3 or so years... go

I've been out of PC gaming for most of the past 3 years as I've been busy studying and have had to cut down my game time to console only. I've also only had a Mac Mini with a terrible graphics card for the past year, so I'd not have been able to play anything even if I'd wanted to. I'm expecting my exam passing bonus in the new year so I'll be getting a new game capable machine.

So... tell me what I've missed. I'm looking for first person shooters really. The last big ones I played were HL2 and Quake 4, Doom 3 and Far Cry a bit before that.

I also enjoyed Splinter Cell in the past, so any suggestions of decent 3rd person games would also be welcome.

Has received some criticism, but personally I love Unreal Tournament 3 :) If you like quake type FPS, UT is the game for you :)

Yeah, people maintain UT2k4 is far better than UT 3 but I really enjoy UT3 and think its rather unrated. I still think Unreal 2 XMP (the multiplayer addon patch) was the best Unreal team vehicle multiplayer experience.

I enjoyed Fear 2 - just a simple shooty shooty game :) That and Dead Space.

Timeshift might be had for cheap as well, it's reasonably fun, not the best fps but again I liked it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R (SoC and CS) are both v.good. SoC once modded with the graphics patches and a few bug glitches ironed out is a really awesome game, one of the best I'd say for its atmosphere and "feel"

COD 4 & World at war, Left 4 Dead 1+2 for me.

All brilliant and im addicted to the online play of left 4 dead 2.
Can't stand COD online as i only last a few seconds before im shot!

Far Cry 2
STALKER: Clear Sky
Borderlands
Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway
Mirror's Edge
FEAR 2
Bioshock

Few games stand up to the quality of the Half-Life series - especially since Episode 2 - but overall I had a blast with all these games. Oh, and if you don't already have it you NEED to get The Orange Box.

Both COD: Modern Warfare, 1 and 2 is what you should play first without a doubt.
Move on to Bioshock and then FEAR 2. Try Crysis and Warhead seeing it's so pretty. The gameplay didn't stick for long as I find myself not going back to it. I go back to the rest of the above mentioned games all the time.

Call of Duty 4 Modern warfare and Left 4 Dead, but if your buying something now I'd go for Modern warfare 2 or Left 4 Dead 2.

Don't know whether you have, but make sure you play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.
