One off? What's the point of that?

Oooo, we'll get 50% this year but next year its business back to normal !

Pointless political vote grabbing move.

Something needs to be done to reverse this bonus driven culture which simply encourages damaging and selfish short-term thinking.

As to why Darling is choosing to do it, I suppose that it may be to pass a poisoned chalice to the Tories who are all in favour of massive bonuses for their donors but are aware that the vast majority of the public are quite rightly opposed to them?

Most of their recent policies (certainly most of the public spending cuts) have been stolen straight from the tories. The others are retarded policies that make no sense but get the proles voting for the party of jealousy.
I think this one is the former, didn't Osborne say that a Tory government would introduce a windfall tax at the conference back in October? :p

It won't raise any significant revenue.
It will damage the UK's status as a financial centre.
It will again show Labour thrive on the politics of jealousy.

Taxation should not be used for cheap points scoring.

There's talk it'll raise around about 1 billion quid. That's not insignificant. It might be a small fraction of the money involved, but that doesn't make it insignificant. As for damaging the UK's status as a financial centre, that's as yet unproven. This article in The Times suggests that Gordon Brown wants the tax to be a permanent thing (or at least a permanent threat) which I'm sure would cause a number of the highest paid bankers to relocate. However, a one-off tax (as Alistair Darling apparently wants to impose) with hints that there are no more to come performs the twin tasks of:

a. Being a slap on the wrist for the reckless gambling with the UK's financial security. Morally they owe something to the country.

b. It's only short-term pain. People either suck it up or go through the personal turmoil of relocating to a country they may not want to work in. People work in London for more than just the wealth.

Banks will just do what Barclays have done and give their staff 100% payrises instead of bonuses. This is 100% fine because it is the obscene bonuses that perpetuated the high-risk gambling that caused this failure of an entire industry in the first place. People on higher salaries will tend to make better decisions than those tempted by the carrot of a high bonus. What's more, these people will constantly have to justify their high salaries every year. High bonus cultures are not in the shareholder's interests now.

Well done Darling.

They target bankers because they think its what the people want to see, all those people earning such huge wages DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!

It's stupid really and as others have said it will just force people to do business else where, why would they want to stay here when they are going to be taxed so hugely?

Surely they target bankers because they are responsible for the current economic downturn and are now getting paid 6 and 7 figure bonuses while a million extra people are on the dole. Or are you just being obtuse?

What else do you expect in the run up to an election, popular politics tripe!

Same as brown attacking camerons toff background.

Vote for me, i r cool!

Yes, that's right. Every single banker is responsible for the economic downturn. No-one else. Not at all. It's that simple.

Are labour just saying what the man in the street wants to hear in order to get re-elected. Will anybody fall for this?

Largely it's the ones who are getting paid the 6 and 7 figure bonuses that are responsible*, which is the topic of this thread. Your cashier on 13 grand a year won't be getting taxed, so I don't know what point you're trying to make.

* - it's probably more accurate to say that lack of regulation of the banking system by Gordon Brown, especially when their leverage ratios started increasing fivefold, is overall responsible. You give people the opportunity to earn big money at the expense of risk and quelle surprise they take it.

Welcome to the world of politics. I really cannot believe that people are saying how bad Labour are for pandering to the voters and ignoring the fact that this is a practice carried out by ALL political parties with a shot at winning an election. What about the Tories pathetic pledge to renegotiate the UK's sovereignty with regard to the Lisbon treaty, have you 'fallen for that'? The fact is, this is just the way our political system works, point scoring.

Judging by the op, yes.
Oh the irony.. It's painful to behold.

Why not targte the idiots that took out stupid loans and lived beyond their means. At the end of the day its them responsible, the banks just took advantage of peoples greed
