New car in January

Hi guys,

I'm going to be buying a new car in Jan. My budget is 10-12k. I was originally looking at Focus ST's; but as I do a lot of driving around town for my job, have decided that the economy is just too bad. I currently drive a Yaris, and hate it.

I want a hatchback or saloon (about the same size as a 3 series, or perhaps a 5 series). I also want it to be sporty; not fussed over diesel or petrol.

Ideas that I've had (but bear in mind I don't know much about cars....)

Focus ST
Civic Type R
Golf
Seat Leon

Any other glaringly obvious choices I've missed?

THanks for any help.

I'd suggest a Golf V GTi as well, or even a GT, but in either case with DSG for all that town driving. Should warn you - its got a pretty stiff ride. The Civic's good to drive around town too - very light controls - but obviously no auto/semi-auto with the Type-R.

Because the build isn't bad (Neither is it great but.. it's better than the rest of the stuff you've mentioned), its a practical sensible hatchback with room in the back for junk which blends into a carpark yet it's got a good engine and is a decent hot hatch when pushed offering good performance. It fits in but stands out, has reasonable running costs and is a bit less boy racer than a cheap plastic Seat.

I would take a step down and try and get the golf GT mk5 but with the 1.4tsi engine, economical but still pretty quick.

Overview Vehicle Summary Performance & Economy Dimensions Interior/Exterior Safety
Fuel consumption (urban) 28.5 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 48.7 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 38.7 mpg
0 - 62 mph 7.9 seconds
Top speed 137 mph
Cylinders 4
Valves 16 v
Engine power 170 bhp
Engine torque 177 lbs/ft

(Copied off autotrader 1.4tsi)

Could add the Megane R26 to the list

/Renaultfanboy

Are the good ones in budget? Dont forget the Megane225 is unique in being both at the top and bottom of the hot hatch class, the first ones that came out were utterly crap, then they fixed it.

Indeed they're in that budget now, there's never all that many for sale which is a pain though, dealers still try and demand an unjustified premium for them though for some reason.

I agree with the 225 comment, for me it would be R26 or none from the Meganes, would easily go for something from the competition otherwise, most likely a Focus ST.

I would drive each of these cars before you start to make a decision. Reading about them can only teach you so much.
