Ok i know that running an impreza Turbo isnt going to be cheaper than running the vectra.

But the Mrs has said that if i can run the impreza for about the same as the vectra, or possibly a bit more. But with the change from the sale of the vectra to part fund it (or at least take care of the big bills Anuual service and petrol can come out of current account as normal), then its ok with her.

So what im trying to work out is how quickly my pot will get depleted.

What are the servicing costs like ? what are the consumables like ? and what things start to fail and when ?

My thoughts are initially that if i can find a well cared for car, and one thats not been modded to within an inch of its life and used and abused. Then i might be onto a winner. But finding a good cared for classic is going to be hard :(

As an idea

this took my eye

Its on 115,000 miles. Whats likely to go next and how much ?

Brake pads for the Vectra were £95 and the discs are over £200 as an example.

Its got yokohama semi slicks on it

I wouldnt buy that one. but thats the sort of thing im thinking of. No daft mods. just appears to have a strut brace and been well looked after.

I wouldnt go for a limited edition model as your paying more just for a few stick on accessories. I'd try to buy a nice clean base model.

Get an STi tbh, the difference in the power and handling compared to a UK/WRX is obvious when you drive both.
They are not that expensive to run either, positively cheap compared with your vectra I'd imagine. Heavy on fuel, but consumables aren't bad. Chew tyres but 16's aren't too expensive, brakes are nothing exotic and can be had cheaply. Uprated clutch = £400 fitted, full exhaust system = £400.
Yes I know I've not owned one myself but a good friend had loads of them and this is how I know how much they cost.
Get one, you won't regret it, in fact you will regret buying that VXR thing ;)

Selling a car to buy a cheaper one and then spending what's left over on running costs doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

A well looked after and non-abused UK turbo will be pretty damn reliable, and shouldn't cost the earth to run. Mine was well over 100k when I sold it, and I drove it like I stole it daily. It never missed a beat the whole time I owned it.

Having said that...

Selling a car to buy a cheaper one and then spending what's left over on running costs doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

.....I agree with Merlin. It doesn't seem a terribly sensible thing to do, but in all honesty I don't think it'll cost that much more to run than the Vectra.

I'm sticking to my guns per the previous thread - you need to back off the whole performance car thing for a while. Buy a reliable boring car and then once every couple of months go carting for kicks.

Maintain this for 18 months and then go treat yourself when you can genuinely say that you can meet the FULL costs of running a performance car.

I absolutely ADORE performance cars but there's absolutely no f'in way in the world I'd allow the costs of one to eat into my family budget.

our financial situation wont stay the same that far into the future. I'm not going to go into intimate detail of our relationship, but it wont be this way forever.

This is just a current short term plan for the next couple of years. If the subaru costs about the same as the vectra (when you account for the £300 ay year savings on tax and tyres alone) then i may not have to dip into the pot unless something breaks.

How many miles do you do per annum?

Because frankly that RB5 is going to be dead in around 30,000 - 40,000 miles.

Get better to be honest, I sold my X reg (Bugeye WRX) for 3k and that was mint and running 280bhp

Wow, are Japanese cars really not that durable?

Oh come on - it's a turbo'd Subaru Impreza with a 2.0 engine - precisely how long do you expect the engine to last when absolutely without question it'll have been nailed day in day out. Frankly I'd say 150k miles is astonishing.

The engines are strong and very well engineered, but seriously let's be sensible.

The boxer turbos will go 150k to 250k depending on how well it has been maintained

Yeah, I should mention, on one of the ones my mate had, I think it was the RA, the engine spontaneously blew up one day with no warning signs.

I really don't think you should be considering an Impreza with 115k miles on it.. I don't think you should be considering an Impreza at all to be honest. Seriously take on board what merlin is saying, don't buy another performance car for a little while

Probably because it was an imported RA which hadn't been looked after when it came to the UK, with the wrong fuel, not mapped for UK fuel, bad mods or something along those lines..

You might get the odd (and I mean the odd) stock (200bhp) Classic 150k - 200k on the clock, but show me a 200k RB5 and I'll show you a forward clocked car :p
