4870 to 5850 = +1fps!?

I ran the Dirt 2 benchmark after upgrading my 4870 512mb to a 5850 only to find my average and minimum fps have increased by 1 (yes that's right, ONE) lousy fps. My processor is an e6400 @ 3.1Ghz and it seemed to be the consensus that it would not be too great a bottleneck (I actually overclocked it more from 2.8 to 3.1 after consulting the forum on my upgrade). I play at a res of 1650*1050 so I thought the memory increase alone would give me a decent fps boost.

£250

1 measly good for nothin' fps

Half of the reason I upgraded was because I'm getting a 24" monitor this week, but still...

Is that +1 not because the 4870 is dx9/10 (I don't know what Drit 2 defaults to) and the 5850 is running dx11?

How about other games?

On your 4870 dirt 2 would be running DX9, now your playing with a 5850 the game runs in DX11 by default which is much more demanding than DX9.

what driver u running?

also u try other games?

u can't compare the 4870 / 5850 running dart 2 because they not using the same dx

4870 would be running Dx10.1 would it not.

Id do as above though, and try other games as well if you havn't, as ive gone to the 5850 from a 1gb 4870, and the performance increase is massive.

well it goes to show that if its dx11 against dx10.1/dx9 that these new graphics cards are performing as they should and you should be very happy that peformance isnt below, if this makes any sense lol

Latest driver

True about dx11. I'm just dissapointed that even on medium settings my min fps is only 2 higher than it was on high with my 4870 (30 from 28). I'm a competitive racer and I was hoping to eliminate the slowdown from the game so I could finally go for some top times, but sadly that hasn't worked out! Is there a way to choose to run in dx9? The dx11 effects just can't be worth it!

I will try some other games now starting with l4d2 (doesnt look that great but still fps boost should be more noticable) but I'm thinking I'll have to buy a new cpu as comparing my results in dirt 2 to this benchmark ( http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=902&pageid=2 ) means my e6400 is costing me 35 in minimum fps!

Oh and while/if I have your attention, is msi afterburner all I need to raise the card volts or do I need to use the msi unlock bios thing too? (card is a sapphire). I doubt overclocking the card will do much good with my crappy cpu, but may aswell give it a shot.

now that does seem low on medium settings to get 30, i would say somethings not right or it is indeed your cpu bottlnecking

why dont you give catylst control centre a go for overclocking, i really wouldnt be messing with bios's and stuff

Somethings definately not right there, im running it at 1680x1050, 8xAA, Ultra settings, and get around 47, although ive got an i7 which might have something to do with it.

ccc seems to have a very low range of clocks on the slider. I pushed it up to the max virtually straight away and it did it without a sweat.

Ok i ran some more tests at 1680x1050, 2xAA on dirt...

Preset / Min fps / Av fps

Ultra low / 45 / 70
Medium / 28 / 38
Ultra high / 23 / 34

I missed out low and high but you can see roughly where they would be. If anyone has similar hardware it would be helpful to know what kinda numbers you get.

The ultra low scores were probably what I was expecting on high with 2xAA :), but even there the gameplay does still feel a bit "lungy", as if the game keeps speeding up and slowing down in small amounts. Makes it really hard to judge the fast tight corners but maybe that's just codemasters' fault.

I guess I'll chuck in an e8400 sometime, or a quad, and see where that gets me, but then it'll probably just be worth going the whole hog which I was trying to avoid.

on ultra low i get average min of 164 and avg frames of 187 this is with no AA and v sync off, your 5850 should be around the same as my 5770 crossfire setup, i cant see your cpu holding it back as much as it is, whats the rest of system specs and what os are you running

Wait a minute, I'm trying to run a 5850 on VISTA, am I a huge idiot? I need windows 7 to run dx11, right?

do you have the dx11 update for vista instaled, run dxdiag to see what version your running and to see if it lists any problems
