Brand New Climate Leaks – Copenhagen Summit now in disarray

Developing countries react furiously to leaked draft agreement that would hand more power to rich nations, sideline the UN’s negotiating role and abandon the Kyoto protocol.

Guardian

The UN Copenhagen climate talks are in disarray today after developing countries reacted furiously to leaked documents that show world leaders will next week be asked to sign an agreement that hands more power to rich countries and sidelines the UN’s role in all future climate change negotiations.

The document also sets unequal limits on per capita carbon emissions for developed and developing countries.

The Danish text, a secret draft agreement worked on by a group of individuals known as “the circle of commitment” – but understood to include the UK, US and Denmark – has only been shown to a handful of countries since it was finalised this week.

The agreement, leaked to the Guardian, is a departure from the Kyoto protocol’s principle that rich nations, which have emitted the bulk of the CO2, should take on firm and binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gases, while poorer nations were not compelled to act. The draft hands effective control of climate change finance to the World Bank; would abandon the Kyoto protocol – the only legally binding treaty that the world has on emissions reductions; and would make any money to help poor countries adapt to climate change dependent on them taking a range of actions.

The document was described last night by one senior diplomat as “a very dangerous document for developing countries. It is a fundamental reworking of the UN balance of obligations. It is to be superimposed without discussion on the talks”.

This doesn't surprise me one little bit, more and more scandal surround CC.

The whole thing is about power and money, and nothing else.

Not human rights, not the environment, but money and power for a select elite.

I'm all for the environment and healthier people but this whole process is corrupt to the core.

So basically, this leak shows that the draft proposal would give the denialists and pro-polluters exactly what they want. I guess that's scandalous in a way, since the purpose of the summit is to reduce emissions.

But it totally debunks the claims of the idiots who've been predicting that any Copenhagen deal would destroy industry by imposing impossible carbon targets. In fact, we see that the reverse is true!

Denialists: not happy even when government policy supports them.  Back to the tin foil drawing board, I guess...

No no, let's all get our knickers in a twist about something that hasn't even happened.

That's much more exciting.

:)

Until scientists come to a united agreement regarding global warming and we no longer have any of this "you're either in or your out" malarkey, then I'll continue to use my electric kettle.

I have a enough guilt rammed down my throat by daily media as it is.

Nothing new here, equality isn't something that we have bags of in our world. There are the greedy rich and the needy poor. The needy poor provide for the greedy rich and suffer at their expense, the greedy rich try and sweep it under the carpet and deny it.

This is just like Israel vs Palestine fighting over their water, on a much bigger scale.

This "leak" looks like any other resource negotiation to me. The rich trying to protect their interests.

Surely this whole waste of time should be about ways to reduce our effect on the climate, not stranglehold the poorer nations?

That's if you buy into the whole "It's for the environment" charade. When you look it at it from the point of view of control, taxes and power then it's no surprise.
