My pc runs the game pretty well, but there are some things i just plain dont get.

Why wont it let me max everything out even though i know my fps will die on my 8800 gts 512.

Why does it say optimized for 64bit when it isnt?

Also why does vsync kill load times? With vsync off i get like 2 of those pictures then the savegame loads totaling around 15 seconds. With it on, it takes well over a minute!!!! & I get horrible screen tearing.

Overall im enjoying it with the settings ive got it on, but tearing just ruins the emersion for me.

What is your current setup? What resolution are you gaming? I remembered reading a post somewhere GTA 4 need a lot of memory to run at max setting, even 1GB is not even enough. I remembered playing Crysis on my 8800GTS 512mb with 24" monitor, man it was horrible.

Try playing Crysis @ 5040x1050, with every high and the natural mod ;)

you need more ram on your gpu.

a decent 1gb gpu should be able to run it at full settings smoothly.

Even a 295 with it's 1.8gb suffers to run the game at certain settings compared to a 5850 with 1gb for example

who come a ps3 will run it with something like a measly 256 of VRAM?

Cause it was coded directly for the 360 and PS3. The PC version needs to be coded to work on thousands of combinations of components, whereas every single console is the same.

So how come every other console port doesn't need an extra gig and a half of gfx ram overhead?

Because the resolution /texture etc are higher on the pc than on consoles.

Also they are badly ported on the pc.

A quad core cpu and a gpu with the power 10x that of a console should be easily running gta4.

Still it runs really slow on pcs regardless of how much better than hardware is compared to a console.

Just lazy programming.

Bad port most probably. Look at Saints Row 2. It runs fine on the consoles but is terrible on the PC.

Also, GTAIV has a lot of new tech in it like Euphoria for physics etc. It hasn't really matured yet so its not going to run well on everything that it wasn't originally designed for.

If GTAIV was made originally for the PC, then there wouldn't have been a problem, but its a very demanding game and the consoles can just about run it as it is and they have 3 cores (360) up to 8 cores (PS3).
