OK well got reasonably far on my 5970 overclock tonight.

Here is how far I got before instability started to creep in:

Which is pretty good (furmark was stressing the card). As you see, the car is still only running at 50 degrees -- so I think the VRMs are overheating.

I think there is further to go .. but am considering my options (or more specifically, how I can verify the VRMs are the problem) ...

so I think the VRMs are overheating.
Why do you think that? They can get pretty hot before throttling, underwater I doubt they're that hot. Stock voltages? More likely it needs some core voltage. Of course that WILL increase the VRM temps even more.
I think everest reports vram temps.

Not sure on 5970, but so does gpu-z and AMDGPUtool with 5870.
Does the water block cool the VRMs?
Full cover block, so yes.

For reference, 5970 with an EK block (too much vcore tbh).

Nice! Keep us updated! ...it may even sway me to watercool mine.

I've managed 900 core (1.15v), 1370 memory (stock volts) but it bangs off 88 deg C in fur mark with the stock cooler.
