I'm thinking of buying a Blu-ray player to complement my HDTV and so I can start building up my film collection now I have my own place :)

Currently I have a Mac Mini running Plex connected to my TV which plays DVDs, AVIs etc. and also works brilliantly with iPlayer HD. In order to play Blu-ray discs I was looking at various standalone players which have network capability, but none seem to support iPlayer.

Could anyone with knowledge / experience of using a PS3 like this tell me if it could do the following?

  • Play pretty standard XviD AVIs from CD using the Sony remote control (or copy them to its internal HDD if required)
  • Connect to my NAS using SMB / FTP / NFS to play movies over my wireless network
  • Work well with iPlayer SD & HD

If they can do all of these things as well as play Blu-ray discs AND game, then they seem to be extremely good value for money :D

Cheers,

I think yes on the first 2 counts. I use Twonky for streaming to it over a wired network.

There's an iPlayer link on the PS3 but never used it.

Thanks guys - I'll probably go ahead and pick one up. Hopefully they aren't too tricky to connect to a wireless network...

I use my PS3 as a media server all the time. Works great over wifi and even better over wired which i now use.

iPlayer doesn't have an HD option on the PS3, but the quality is pretty decent anyway.

merry xmas :)

Thanks, and likewise :)

Ah okay - I have to admit, the few things I'd be likely to watch in HD on iPlayer I will probably buy on Blu-ray anyway, so I don't think it's a big loss.

Just ordered a PS3 Slim 120GB with a remote control and HDMI cable for £240, not bad :D
