VW Dealer @ Servicing: "Your Anti Roll Bushes are worn..." £££ please

Ouch that is expensive, glad i didnt buy a golf. Took my fiesta ST in for a service at ford in Derby and they charged me £216, for service, front and rear tracking, brake fluid change

glad i got the belt and brake fluid done on my lupo by the dealership when i bought it.

to the OP, you didn't authorise the work, don't pay for the work you didn't authorise

I don't think I would ever authorise work from a dealer in a service, the first time they ruined my wheel and the 2nd time they used it to buy lunch.

A friend was just talking about VW and how they always say there is a flat tyre and the anti roll bushes are worn, they said the same thing a year ago and just recently!

Bushes from GSF are part number 43360 ( I think...) and the bracket is 43390.Two of each will cost less than 20 pounds all in and they take half an hour to fit!...

Refuse to pay for the work unless they can prove you authorised it, which of course they cannot as you did not.

Thousand quid bill from a service on a low mileage Golf is pathetic. I've NEVER had that size bill following a service at BMW and my car has done many times the mileage of your Golf. Whole thing seems pathetic. Even IF the work needed doing..

Totally agree.

For want of a better word, you are being raped at that price! IIRC, my old man recently paid just under £300 for a cambelt/ water pump change and a service carried out on his Fabia vRS. All work carried out by a VW specialist... avoid main dealers like the plague imo as they literally rip your eyeballs out.

Unless they're knocking they'll be fine.

One local stealer kept trying the anti-roll bush trick on me when I had the Bora, and there was nothing wrong with them...

well its ok here as the main dealer price matches any vw specialist using original parts in the radious of about 4-5 miles i think and luckly enough there is a specialist that is just half a mile away that is always happy to provide a quote lol

if you don't have any luck with the price promise thingy, I'd be tempted to give VW UK a call, you never know, that particular dealer may have had many complaints about ripping people off and may give you some money back in a 'goodwill gesture'

The VAG variable service can be quite expensive - up to £300 on a diesel. It depends which one they did.

£400ish is about right for a cambelt on a VW - it is an engine out job remember.

ARB Bushes aren't expensive - £8 each or something I think and unless you need to change the front ARB they're minutes to change. Changing the front ARB on most VAG cars is an engine out job, so if they did that, fair enough, but surely they would have done it when they pulled the engine for the cambelt. But, if they've also charged for a 4-wheel alignment (and they could) then you could be looking at big money (£80-£100 on top).

They only need to take the wheels off to change the brake linings, the fluid they can change with the wheels on.

Spark plugs are ludicrously priced at VW, but if you just want to pay labour, buy them elsewhere, as long as you buy the right ones, they will fit them.

Depending on where you are then try IndyTech, VAGTech, JabbaSport or Unit 18 for future servicing. They're all in the midlands, but they are all better than a regular VAG dealer and cheaper too.

Why don't you look into taking it to a VAG specialist indie garage? I use Awesome GTI quite a bit for my Leon and they are excellent!

They offered to replace my entire anti roll bar and fit the new bush for ( ) £450 on top of my service cost.

I had both my front and rear ARBs uprated, bushes changed and 4 wheel alignment done for less than that at Awesome..

Changing the front ARB on most VAG cars is an engine out job

They only have to drop the front subframe to do it. :)

Does a cam belt need a change on such low milage? sounds odd to me but then again i know zero about VW's. Must make their cam belts from paper.

Right, got the car back, they cleaned it inside & out, polished my alloys and it does seem to drive better (at least the engine is less "squeaky"). Here's the invoice I paid:

The £112.69 "repair kit" raises an eyebrow, and if anyone could comment on the labour charges that would be appreciated :)

It's every 4 years or every 40000 miles, whichever comes first. I've not had mine changed once since I got the car new back in December 2003, so this was 2 years overdue :p

Still driving the same car you had at school - impressive!
Yes I am... stalker...

Why do they do that will the oil £43 for 4-5 liters there is no way it costs them that much in a big drum...trying to make a big profit on oil alone.

they are having a laugh for £200 labour for the cambelt and tensioner
i had it done in norway for that including parts

if they did replace the cambelt and tensioner, why isn't it on the list? unless that's the 'repair kit'.
but did the tensioner even need replacing? was it squealing?

£520 labour  That's a ******* joke, parts aside. Most places charge £60-70 an hour inc VAT.

It can't of taken them 8.5 hours.

EDIT: Just seen that incudes Cam Belt chnage but it still seems a bit steep.

£125 + Vats (so thats £137.99 inc vat) worth of labour for a service ????

My 3rd year service on the vectra (baring in mind this a 2.8 V6 Turbo that takes 6 litres of fully synethic) was £163 all in. Including vat !

From the vauxhall main dealer !

At least dick turpin wore a mask

A quick google on the part number says the repair kit is the cambelt and tensioner parts. Cost online seems around £100+VAT.

That's a big bill. Faced with a £600 one I traded the Bora against a new car.
