Ok, im planning a new build soon, and im struggling to decide on the processor. Im mainly going to be using the pc for gaming (farcry 2, cod 4, l4d2 and the such) but id want it also to run other applications well and preferably run quite cool. It also needs to be a decent overclclocker. My budget is £150 and the 2 cpu's that its come down to is either the 965 or the i5 750 (although if anyone can think of a different one i'll consider that one aswell). Comments/ suggestions appreciated :)

If the main use is gaming then either would be a good choice, i would go for whichever works out cheapest for cpu + mobo combination.

thanks for the replys :) @ blaine, the one with c3 stepping seems abit more expensive and is above the £150 :( @rxmac, the difference between the i5 with motherboard and the 965 with motherboard is £5 (965+mobo is £5 cheaper) so its still mainly down to which processor is "better" for the purpose :(

depends what fanbase your with :D

sat here with a i7 at 4ghz and a p2 at 3.6 and gamed on both ;) after 1680 res nothing in it either way at gaming

so pick whatever you like both good.

Clock for clock the i7 750 is faster but in games alone you're unlikely to see any difference.

You're also pretty much guaranteed a minimum of 4ghz with the i7, whereas I had trouble getting a 965 to 3.8ghz LinX stable, I haven't used a C3 stepping one though.

Heh £10 under budget and you got the motherboard too! . . . just add your prefered 4GB set of RAM and your fave GPU and your away!!

from the 2 cpus your saying, i would get the 965 C3. it should easyly clock to 3.8-4ghz, plus the new games are using all 4 cores, so in the long run it's better...

I don't care what the dude buys.

The i5 is the better CPU for everything, though. Including gaming. Ardent AMD aficionados don't like to hear such things being said but hey, truth yearns to be free.

*clears throat* Intel's third-tier Nehalem is a better processor for gaming than AMD's flagship.

SO much fun!

If it were me and was looking for a 4GHz overclock i'd go with i5. I've personally seen too many people with their 965 C3 steppings sitting at 3.8GHz still and hardly any at 4GHz- not that its going to make that much difference though. For just gaming theres really not that much in it so instead of comparing the cpus (which aren't that different performance wise) i'd look at future compatiblilty with new tech and AM3 is supporting the thuban 6 core cpu next year + more. Whereas the 1156skt doesn't seem to be supporting any further than 4 cores. If you don't plan to upgrade very much with the build this wont really matter, but its still something to consider. Its upto you though :)

Another thing to consider is with the i5 you will be using socket LGA1156, which is restricted to 8x/8x PCI express in dual gpu setups. Whereas the AM3 can use 16 x/16 x

That's true however it's not such a big deal *and* who knows if future CPU revisons may include an updated on-chip PCI-E controller that is x16/x16 . . .

Whereas the AM3 can use 16 x/16 x
Serious question, I don't suppose you know off-hand which AM3 chipsets are x16/x16, I only know the 785G and that is x8/x8 I believe?
