Whole house power consumption

My house ildes at around 250w. That's my PC/Router, 3 X External drives, Sky+ Box and TV on standby. Fridge kicking in takes it up to around 350w.

When I'm using my PC (TFT/Speakers on etc) I'm sitting around the 400w level.

Lesson learned - next time wait for a bill to drop through the door before phoning gas companies :D

I'd add one proviso to that. Write down your meter reading and keep it safe. Hell, take a photo of your meter with the daily paper on it or something. Just in case they wind up sending a bill for the previous person's gas as well as yours - and without a reading there's no way you or they will be able to tell.

Well I've been around adding up the standby wattage of each room and I'm 99.5% sure I've covered everything, but there's STILL roughly 300-320 watts unaccounted for!

We've tried turning the cooker off, no difference. The only other appliances I haven't measured are the boiler and the washing machine. There isn't a single other electrical item in the house that was running at the time

he means kwh...

My usage seems very moderate in comparison, 3 bed house just me living there, ~12kwh per day average or so. I dont have one of those monitors though, i am with southern electric, can i get one?

Yes

if you've got Gas and Electric with them ring up and ask to be put on the "betterplan" tarriff. You'll get green energy at normal rate and a free monitor etc.

*assuming its the same as Swalec, which is part of the same company.

After working out my last quarterly bill i was supprised how little i used.

I used in total 1292kwh for 92 days which equates to around 14kwh per day, this is in a 3 bedroom house which is occupied all day most days, daily electric showers, bi-daily washing machine and dishwasher, The 46" plazma tv is on a lot of the day, Also have my media pc, NAS, Router, Virgin box and lappie on all the time, also Cooker used once a day, Wife used hairdryer and hair straighteners every morning as well.

We never really worry about the electricy we use we just use what we want and pay the bill's, this is why i am supprised by how little we actually use.

Does anyone know if the monitor units take account for meters with day and night rates? Ie my meter has dual rates (one day, one night) and if the monitor doesn't switch between them then the rate it will be costing will be wrong.

Interested to see the rates I'm using. Considering the OWL one.

Last winter bill was large because I had the heating on loads and the HPS bulb (400W) going 12hrs for the chillies :D Should be a drop.

Me too I only use 9kwh per day average in a 4 bed with 3 tv's that never seem to be off :D

Most of my mates that run up huge bills seem to run a tumble drier 3 times a day.
