AMD Phenom II X4 945, 955, 965 etc. Black Edition

Is that not just luck of the draw though. Plenty of evidence around on the net of successful unlocks, especially on MSI 790 chipset MOBO's with ACC ?
yes it is luck of the draw but my point was if a person really wants a quad they should buy a quad.

if the person want a x2 or x3 then yes go for it and if it unlocks then its a bonus...

but im just trying to get at is , don't buy a x2 or x3 just thinking to unlock to a quad. because u could be disappointed....

Fair comment and I understand where your coming from

seroiously off topic and a little weird but... Big.Wayne ... all your posts over the years, are a joy to read, especially as you come across so chirpy and enthusiastic and full of life  :p :D

£62 on a heatsink fan? . . . . are you crazy! :p

I see all the cool kids with them though?

Your supposed to be helping me choose
Hey mr_tea,

I'm not sure how much more help I can be, if your running with the Cool-Kids you better had deep pockets as the Cool-Kids Edition stuff carries a premium that doesn't sit well with me. We all have different wants and needs when we make a purchase so you really should go with whatever you want as in this day and age it's pretty hard to gOOf up as all the kit is first class! :)

I personally admire enthusiast kit that is affordable, and I can tell you when your looking at kit that isn't truely affordable the decision making process becomes a bit more painful. As an example most people won't think twice when buying a £2.00 sandwich for lunch because most likey they can afford £2.00 but once you exceed your personal realistic maximum budget you begin a much more detailed thought process of weighing things up, it kinda is a sign that your about to overspend!

With that in mind I think this is a really affordable Cool Kids Gaming System-Core , PCI-E 2.0 x8/x8 Crossfire ready, full fat 6MB cache Black Edition x2 processor and a tasty 4GB set of DDR3 memory modules!

Cannot imagine having to spend a penny more other than to eventually pick up a third party premium heatsink if the retail unit doesn't let you eek out those last few hundred MHz from the overclock!

Please take a few minutes to consider your realistic budget and what value you would be getting for the amount asked . . . .

Mr AMD lol! :p

It may seem like that but that basket could be filled with Intel® goodies if the suits would change their marketing strategy . . .

As to unlocking the processor, I'd dunno, if your talking about an Athlon II X3 I'd give you a 25% chance of a successful unlock but if your talking a Phenom II 550 Black Edition I'd say you more near the 50% mark for a successful unlock!

I went for the best of both worlds with the Athlon II X3 chip as they have a chance of unlocking to Quad-Cores or unlocking the extra 6MB of level 3 cache but if your unlucky (like me) you just end up with a nice overclockable Triple-Core! . . .

The two chips that seem to offer the most potential for the least money are:

  • Phenom™II X2 550
  • Athlon™II X3 425
