... for all you aviation types, Boeing's PR people were determined the 787 was flying in 2009 so it's first proper test flight is taking place this afternoon. Boeing are streaming it on this page:

However the weather over KSEA isn't looking that good, they could postpone it if the weather drops below certain minimums but if there's any chance of launching it will be going.

I'm quietly looking forward to this :)

why is this significant if you dont mind me asking? Not flaming, im actually curious....seems just another plane to moi

the 787 (or "Dreamliner" as it's sometimes called) is the most fuel efficient per-passenger-mile airliner ever built.

Hands up those who clicked the thread not knowing what a 787 was, but hoping it was *another* super-massive plane, then was rather dissapointed after reading Aod's post? :p

Quite interesting from an engineering/PR point of view but I probably won't be watching the live feed :D

Boeing was going to build a superliner (and would have done before Airbus) but realised that the economy would not be suitable for it and scrapped the plans before they wasted millions on it.

for reference, sales of the A380 compared to their projected estimates have almost been as bad as sales of Itanium processors :D

I don't know what an Itanium processor is, so I understand your point completely :D

I can agree/imagine that the future of any kind of travel will have economy/environment in mind rather than trying to push the boundaries of engineering in terms of scale.

this image should explain what i was trying to convey more adequately:

not one of Intels' success stories :D

I think Thomson are replacing most of thier long haul fleet with these?

Yep, they are the European launch customer for the B788, although I don't expect any deliveries for them before 2013 due to the current production problems Boeing are having.

It's not just fuel efficient. It should be more comfortable too - quieter, better air quality, more stable in turbulence, bigger windows etc.
