Hey OcUK,

I've been thinking of trying to start a small computer repair business to get me a bit of money.

But now I've got my first job I'm like, freaking out at how much to charge, they want me to give them dual monitors, dual mice, and dual keyboards, I know what to do, getting a video splitter+amplifier just I'm lost how much I should charge to put in a splitter, and put it in :O

And help on how much I should charge, my parents say £60 but I think that is robbery for something that will take me very little time.

I would have thought something in the region of £20-30 p/h would be fair enough, seeing as most jobs will take you less than an hour.

Well firstly make sure what ever you charge, it covers your cost. Just times an amount that suits you by how long your working?

They are paying for your time but also your experience. The fact you know what to do means it'll take you a lot less time than if they were trying to figure it out. They will only pay what they feel it is worth to them, if they feel £60 is too much you'll know, and can lower your price if needed.

As my mother said to me... Something thats simple to you can be pretty difficult to the person your doing it for. Also its your time their taking up and things like petrol (if you have a car) ordering things in.. blah blah blah

Normally when I fix something easy on one of my mothers friends computers i normally say £5 as they dont take "no it was nothing" for an answer... but they give me £20 instead :D

I was once asked to build a computer with 8 monitors for someone, I charged them £300 + cost of components (about £1800 total) and I felt like I was ripping them off.

They had in fact been quoted £4000 by several places, so bear in mind that what you think the job is worth will probably be nowhere near what the job is worth.

Why would you want two screens, two keyboards and two mice on one PC?
Are you sure they dont want them to work independantly?

Well, going by what my Dad said they want them to be the same, I have no clue why. But still. If they want independant PC's then even more money for me :P

And thanks guys, I think I'll charge like £20 since it's not too hard to do, unless they want more stuff done. And yeah I will make sure I cover the costs too.

You started a company without working out what to charge? Or are you not a proper company with insurance, accountant, tax paid etc

anyway you need to work out the time it willtake and round it up tithe hour and go from there. Is it for a home or business? You should be looking at 35-60 per hr depending on the type of work. Don't under value yourself. Don't treat them or the work you do as a hobby. People are paying for your experience and expertise.

Fixing is one thing but be careful when building machines for people. Who do you think they will call when they can't figure out how to set up margins in Word or when they accidently unplug the computer and then complain that their monitor isn't working?

Yeah, I'm a 15 year old kid and it's not like a business business, just a little thing I can do to bring in some money, as the place my dad works at will need lots of work done

By the sounds of it you can charge quite a lot more than you think, just get a rough figure and ask the client if they think it is acceptable (or something along those lines).
