Hi all - I'm just researching CPU's currently running an AMD 3800x2 (showing its age).

Just wondering if the i7 was worth the premium over i5 - I mainly use my computer for coding sites - I play the odd good game - age of empires etc - would like to have a go on crysis etc.

thanks

You can't play AOE on a x2 3800? Get it clocked to 2.8ghz, mine has been running at that for years and still plays everything. Crysis in high, that new saboteur game and others

I would go with i7 purely due to the facts that they have hyper threading, performs same if not better than i5, uses tri channel DDR3 RAM, takes full advantage of sLi and Crossfire configurations and i9 is based on the 1366 x58 socket.

For me, it's worth paying the premium IMO.

the difference between an Intel® Core™ i5 and a Intel® Core™ i7 is the difference between a Double-Whooper and a Double-Whooper with cheese! . . i.e you would have to be the most analy retentive geek on earth to be passionate about the difference, either that or just plain allergic to cheese! :p

Yes now that they've renamed it officially, i9 becomes the Core i7 980X and shares the same socket. Difference is one is 6cores and the original i7 is 4. Hence the reason why I suggested the i7. Being able to upgrade and utilize a 6 core cpu is worth paying the premium for.

It seems strange that the 1156 is the newer socket yet the 1366 is the one likely to have a longer future.
