Rage Against The Machine's Morello praises chart race

Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello has said that beating the X Factor single to Christmas number one will be a "wonderful dose of anarchy".

A Facebook group which aims to get the band's 1992 hit Killing In The Name to the top of the festive chart has attracted more than 750,000 members.

Initial sales figures showed the rock classic was ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry's debut single The Climb.

Morello told BBC 6 Music it was "heart warming".

'Unexpected windfall'

He told the station's breakfast show that the "rebel anthem song will transcend the Christmas holidays".

He added: "The one thing about the X Factor show, much like our own American Idol, is if you're a viewer of the show you get to vote for one contestant or the other, but you don't really get to vote against the show itself until now."

He added: "It's this machinery that puts forward a particular type of music which represents a particular kind of listener.

"There are a lot of people who don't feel represented by it and this Christmas in the UK they're having their say."

The guitarist said the single's position as a Christmas number one contender was an "unexpected windfall" and he plans to donate some of the proceeds to a charity which helps children progress their musical careers in the UK.

"My hope is that one of the results of this whole Christmas season is there'll be a new generation of rockers who will take on the establishment with the music they write."

Meanwhile, in an interview with music magazine NME, Simon Cowell - who is behind the X Factor single - said that the show has "done everyone a favour" in adding some life to the festive charts.

"I think we were getting to a point where [the Christmas chart] was all becoming like The Millennium Prayer, and I just didn't like that song."

"I think we all have this belief that the Christmas number one was just amazing, a real special occasion, but actually when you look at them over recent years, it was Bob the Builder one year, Mr Blobby…there's a tradition of quite horrible songs.

"I think I've done everyone a favour.

"Shows like Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor have actually got people more interested in music again, and are sending more people into record stores. We haven't seen this kind of uplift in years."

McElderry's single has been available to download since Monday, but physical copies go on sale on Wednesday.

In recent years, winners of The X Factor have eased their way to the top of the Christmas chart.

That's not the reason I bought the RATM song it's because ITV stands to make 75 million from the series and they couldn't even be bothered to produce a new song for the final.

The UK has a wealth of songwriting talent yet the winning song is a disney cover. They've had a year to produce something decent.

Come on that just shows the contempt Cowell et al. have not only for the show and its winner but for the public in general. The fact that it is already 2nd in the charts and that other X-factor entity Cole is number 6 speaks volumes for the direction the UK is heading.

However it's not the fault of good bands in the UK of which there are 1000s. Why hasn't anyone tried to create a TV version of battle of the bands, groups singing their own songs each week. It's one I would watch the could even keep the x-factor format.

All girl bands, all boy bands, mixed, over 25s etc.

Because if they did covers it would be crap and if they used their own music no one woudl appreicate the real talent because they haven't heard it before.

I personally think it's a great idea.

He's got a point though. One of the reasons stuff like X-Factor and BGT dominate the charts is because everyone steals everything else (not that I'm moralising over that).

The real irony is that a lot of people are legitimately downloading music for the first time (the RATM song) in defense of music. WTF?

Can i buy RATM on Amazon uk? Will it still count?

Yes you can and yes it will.

Go go go...

Good point, I have only purchased 3 different songs in the last few months, the first I have paid for in about the last 7-8 years.

They basically had that on T4 last year or the year before and I don't think many people watched it.

Hmm.. as much as I can't stand X Factor and the way it has become more so than ever a money making scheme by Simon Cowell. The Killing in the name song by RATM sounds 10x worse than Joe Mcelderry's song.

Lets go back to basics: If you are going to boycott X factor then at least do it with a song that could be seen as mainstream and almost pop, not some grunge crap.

As much as I hate to say it... Joe, you got my money.

RATM is mainstream.

Their worldwide status and sales show this, surely?

Or do you mean appeals to 13 year old girls?

The thing is this has nothing to do with boycotting x-factor.

No one is saying "don't buy x-factor song" the campaign is to buy enough RATM singles to stop x-factor being number 1.

Boycotting x-factor would never work as all the Grannys and Pre-Teens would buy it anyway.

Some scoundrel at the local Morrisons has hidden all the copies of the Joe single behind various compilation CDs.

;)

Oh well, for what its worth - purchased my copy of 'Killing in the name of'.

Honestly can't see it becoming number 1 this Christmas, but if it does then I'll be very amused.

To be fair, its not the winner of X Factor thats being targeted I feel. Its Simon Cowell, and quite rightfully so as well... Nothing against the winner, I actually thought he'd got a good voice, can sing a whole lot better then me, so he is talented...

I do hope the winner 'can' go on to better things, he has worked hard to win the show, we don't see half of what goes on behind, all the rehearsals, the heartache for those who don't make it.... etc..

I play guitar, and I'd never have the guts to get up on a show like this and try my luck, plus my talent runs out quickly... lol

However Simon Cowell does need to be knocked down a peg or two. He is really starting to think he's god in the music industry...

Just my thoughts, and anyhow. Can't beat a bit of rage at times... :-)

FAIL! :D

...so when you consider there was no album titled 'Killing in the Name', we go back to his question, why does the Killing in the Name CD not count? :p

I own both, and I don't care what it's called (self titled isn't it)
