ive got the Asus extreme 2 rampage and im thinking of getting a soundcard the Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 PCI-Express Sound Card and im just wondering if it would fit into the pci-e slot that the SupremeFX X-Fi fits in as ive read that the Asus soundcard is big.

Unfortunately, I think you're out of luck. From the end of the x1 PCIe slot, you've got only about 30mm before you hit the heatsink. You could put it in the third x16 slot.

thanks for the quick reply m8
if i put the soundcard in the 3rd pci-e slot would that interfere with the other 2 pci-e slots because there in crossfire,in other words slow them down?

I think with X58 you'll get x16/x16/x1 which will be perfect. :)

And that Xonar lights up pretty colours, so it won't be hidden. ;)

when you say heat sink do you mean cpu heatsink?
ive got the H50 so its water cooled which dosnt stick out,
how long is the soundcard is it possible to find out please.
thanks.

Sorry, the NB heatsink, just below the CPU socket. It has a dent in it to allow the bundled soundcard to fit, but that is only as long as x1 PCIe.

I downloaded the manual from the Asus website, but it didn't list any physical dimensions. If googling fails, you could try doing it using proportions from a picture, but it isn't going to fit in the top slot, I can assure you!

thanks for help, dosnt look like any soundcard would fit in that slot abit silly really, but if it works in pci-e slot 3 just the same then it dosnt matter.
I want my crimbo presant;)

The slot layout is pretty dodgy on the R2E. It's disappointing that the 2 x16 PCIe slots are only a single space apart, meaning that the top card gets restricted airflow. It isn't ideal on a £260 board - not everyone can afford watercooling. :(

yea i know what you mean,im CF 2x4890
1 is Asus the other sapphire vapor-x
when i have the sapphire card in slot one it really gets hot 83c at idle, but if i have asus in slot 1 both cards are 53c idle.

Totally agree the spacing for the pcie slots on this board is just plain daft. I moved onto this board from a msi P7N board and the layout on that was far better than this.
also to run tri sli on this board requires a case with 8 expansion slots which is very rare, most cases only having 7.

daft isnt it even most of the full tower expensive cases cant do it .
for instance

None of those case above can support a card in slot 3 ????? Bizarre

only case I know that accomodates is

Bloody annoying really as I was thinking of having another dabble with trisli BUT I am not changing case or mobo again just yet

The Raven RV02 has 8 slots actually and will handle tri-sli. A lot cheaper than the PC-P80 too and arguably cools better than the P80.

Why do you need a case with e-atx support to fit a rampage and run tri-sli ? The RV02 fits a rampage (or asus supercomputer) mobo fine. Neither are eatx motherboards (common misconception on the web) as they are standard atx length, just 1 inch wider (so closer to CEB form factor) and still contain the standard atx holes. If it was an eatx board the dimensions would be slightly larger there would be additional holes on the board. In fact The 9 stand offs in the raven rv02 match the 9 mobo holes the rampage uses - exactly. I've fitted one for a pc I built for a mate. Now if you had one of thew new EVGA 4x classified boards, you would need an eatx form factor case with at least 8 pci slots (e.g. Lian Li PC-P80) thanks to the fact the new 4x is longer than the ATX form factor. But a decently sized case with 8 pci slots will do you for the rampage if you plan on tri sli or tri fire. Of course, if you do, you wont be able to fit fit a full length sound card in the top pci-e slot unless you bend back some of the metal pieces off the chipset heatsink :)

See last line regarding rampage.
