Who has SKY HD+?

Nice Sky man has just installed my Sky HD - yay!

The HD box still has the old EPG - boo!

Anyway I can force an update?

What make is your box?

Try this:

To force an update do the following, it is however worth pointing out that this may not give you the new EPG, it just downloads and installs the latest stabe release for your box, which may or may not include the new EPG:

Put the box in standby and let it shut down the hard drive, then switch off the box at the mains wall socket or by pulling the power cable out (which is easier for the next stage). Press and hold the "backup" button on the top, while still holding switch the mains power back on. Continue to hold the button for approx 20 seconds until the LEDs all light up. As soon as this happens, you'll see a message on the screen (this may not be visable via HDMI). Leave the receiver for at least 15 minutes to download the software via satellite.

Anyone know what the current best deals for Sky HD (not sports and preferably not movies too) are out there? Seen a few but thought I'd ask anyway!

Being honest, the SKY HD box without movies and sports is a total waste, there just isnt enought content otherwise.

That's not true at all imo. Plus it's not just for watching HD, it's still a Sky+ box with all the other channels :p

It is if you are paying the £10/month extra sub (I would guess)

These people who offered me Sky HD from a shared dish also wanted me to pay a one off fee of £200 for installation (which imo is a **** joke), fortunately my flat is already set up for it (which I only discovered last night) so hopefully its going to be more in tune with the standard £30 install fee (infact it should be a lot cheaper as the dish and cabling is already laid, but I bet it wont be)

Hey All,

Just had HD installed. We have had sky for years and not had it connected to the phone line. I used a phone extension so they could setup the HD. Do I need to keep the phone connected to the box? I couldnt see anything in the T&C when I received the letter confirming my upgrade.

FYI we have multiroom and the box upstairs is connected to the phone socket (just not the HD box in the front room)

Cheers,
Scotton

It is in the T&C on this site: http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/skytv/skyhd

Your Sky box(es) must be connected to a fixed telephone line for 12 months.

However that being said you have been a customer for ages so I doubt they care as much as with new customers.

There was a thread a while ago about people being fined by letter, so if it is easy to tidy up and pin it to the wall properly then do so. Otherwise you can take the risk and if they do get in touch just say it became disconnected by accident.

I think the crux of it is that the boxes are being pretty much given away, so Sky are losing money on them. They say you need to be connected to the telephone line as that is how the on-demand pay-per-view services work, which is how they get their money back from some customers.

They're generally not bothered on single box installations. On multiroom, however, they'll be hounding you to connect it up. If you don't, that cheap £10 multiroom sub will be changed to a full price extra sub.

The phone line connection for both is necessary for Sky to ensure both are in the same house, and you've not just given it to someone else.

Yeah good point. For us it was fairly easy to connect up both boxes, when they did the installation I already had a phone socket setup for my bedroom and the other box was done by the installer. But that was just a case of running telephone cable around the wall to the other side of the room.

Excellent, many thanks...

I think ill just pin the cable for the 12 months then worry about it then. Not gonna splash out on wireless adapters or anything.

Happy with the picture quality on the HD channels and now just looking forward to watching some football!

Cheers

With multiroom, both boxes HAVE to be connected to a phone line PERMANENTLY, not just for 12 months. If not you WILL get a letter from them, swiftly followed by a bill for 2 subscriptions if you don't fix it pronto!

They must be slacking as for at least the last 3-4 years only one of the boxes have been connected (the one in the bedroom). The front room box has not been plugged in.

Ill speak with the Mrs and see what her view is with the cable, if she does not like it ill probably just leave it out and wait for them to contact me and play dumb saying its connected (then run the cable to fix it)

Not so, mine was disconnected for many months by mistake, I didn't get a letter. They really are not that strict on it for existing/long term customers.

Not really you just got luckly

We got harassed for ages and we where long term sky customers 10 years.... Even got charged for two subs once.. For not having the second box plugged in which it was, turn out it was something the way it was set up.

We finally had enough and sky does not get a penny off us after they banned us from calling out. Even though not one single bill was missed said it was for our own good having such big bills... We where paying out around 70 pounds for our package a month also

strange, the multiroom sub thing asks the box to do a callback randomly at anypoint in the month, if it continually fails the callback, as said we will start to harass you

Just plug in a phoneline once a month, completly restart the box, this forces a callback. Then disconnect the phoneline for a month, rinse and repeat
You work for Sky?

He is talking poo as i have had sky for the 8 years and never had a sky box to a phone line : )
also Sky fit Hd to homes with out phone lines you pay extra £20 on install (so the engnieer makes a phone call on his own mobile to pair card and box :( hope this clears things up.
