I finally got it right with a FAT (non quick) format - this worked so then when I tried to install Win 7 through windows?

Lol.

You've been "doing this for a fair few miles", and tried to install to a FAT32 partition? Awesome.

Crazy how you can't install an OS on a 14 year old filesystem!

The faulty component is the squishy bit between the screen and the chair by the sound of it.

For someone to come out and say "X is ****e because I can't get it to do what I want" instead of "Can anyone help me get this working?", you know the score right away....

This is exactly my point it was the only one that worked nothing was changed in between!!!

Typical post of a person that has got some hardware incompatibility or hardware issues. Windows is perfect as it is since XP SP1, Vista and now 7 is just awesome.

People keep installing countless amounts of software demos, games etc, then they are surprised when things go wrong.

My leet fault finding skillz are telling the major problem definitely lies in between your chair and your desk.....

Oh and as said before constant NTLDR errors probably means your HDD is about to kick the bucket, hence all the issues you are having within Windows.

What file system will you try to use when the hard drive wont even spin up?

Never had any prob's at all installing a OS from XP>Win7, infact it gets easier with each OS, Win 7 is a doddle to install even better from a USB Stick. I just make sure l have the latest drivers downloaded ready to install straight away. If your sound card manufacturer has no Win 7 drivers try Vistax64 driver and why FAT FORMAT?

What crap and customization have you installed and done to it.

You probably all think that i'm some dick that installs loads of ****. At the point of reinstalling I had two additional processes on win7 from when i first installed it and install a very minimal amount of programs to keep it fast. In this case i'm not talking about how slow it is but Windozes niggles and little problems.

Getting repeated NTLDR errors means you've got a dying hard drive, that's probably the root of your problems
