Why do people pay Taxi Companies double?

I used to work as a mini cab driver in London and really I never ever want to go back to this s..t.

Last time when i was made redundant i went back to mini cabbing temporarily just to make my living.

So i hired a car from a mini cab company, I had to pay them weekly rent of £150 + car rent £130 + xda rent £20 + insurance £50 (this is all weekly). On top of this you have to pay for fuel and other small expenses like car cleaning etc. Fuel alone is easily £100+.

Just to cover the costs i had to work for few days, on some weekdays i would take from as little as £60 to £150 if i got lucky, this is for working 6am-6pm, sometimes id stay longer if i had to. Then weekends come and this is where you make money for your own pocket. I worked 20hours on Fri and then Sat about 18hours, sleeping in the car every single time I was waiting for a job to come.

I almost never had any RL due to working always during weekends, all the spare time i had for myself was Sun afternoon.

All this so i could take home £500-700 home p/w for doing 80-90hours p/w. (Dont forget that you work as self employed so you get no benefits such as pay sick, pay holiday or anything at all). Basically if you get unlucky and get sick for weekends you end up taking home around £0.

Ah and dont forget all the drunk people you have to deal during weekends, luckily for me I barely had any non paying customers/troublemakers but s..t happens every day to some drivers.

I know it sounds like a lot to pay when you go to the airport and it costs £30-40 to get there but the truth is that you dont get jobs like this all the time, you still most of the time go empty back to the area that you cover. a lot of times you get customers that order a cab just so when you drive to their place and it takes you 10-20 minutes by the time you get there they change their mind or are gone already, it happened to me so many times it was just unbelievable.

Ah and the new regulations are just crazy, 2 mots per yer, special insurance that costs £2k to start with. £150 p/y for yellow badge etc, PVC (or whatever is calld) license £300 every 3 years, + medical test etc.

I was going crazy to be honest when i was doing this s..t but I preferred to earn living rather that getting into debt. I quit after 4 months as i started having high blood pressure at the age of 28 from doing this, luckily for me i was offered a job in IT few weeks later. I knew what i was getting into as I did this before few years ago for 1 year but that time i had my own car and could afford to work less hours but still my real life life was affected by it.

Hackney cabs/black cabs are a different story, as you have to study actually to get the license and in London is hard work to get one, without the extra costs that you have with mini cabs drivers probably can make a decent living but it seems like its slowly changing for them too.

Why do people pay hundreds of pounds for designer jeans? Why do people buy expensive toilet roll? Why do people pay thousands of pounds for dusty old pieces of furniture? Why do people pay £45 for Modern Warfare 2? The list goes on mate, you're asking the wrong question.

WTF is that about? Do they charge 3x more for toilet roll on new years eve?

Supply and demand. The same way we're forced to pay almost double on train fairs during rush hour.

Thats to encourage people to use the sevices during a quieter time. Taxi drivers are not trying to get you to have your night out at a different time of year.

You pay extra on Sundays at those carvery places, because they know everyone wants a carvery on a Sunday.

In Derby, during the Xmas/New Year period for the past 2 years, 2 of the main private hire companies have only added an extra 1 pound to their journey, which is pretty good if you need to get to and from Nottingham during that period.

I think it makes perfect sense, people in restaurants wouldn't work for normal wages on x-mas day, food is always jacked up in prices around x-mas in restaurants, I see little difference.

Whether I'd pay it is a different question

I wonder, working new years ever or Christmas day. You would expect at least triple pay and a day in lou, so just doubling their price is pretty darn good.
And at the end of the day what choice do you have.

Like others have said, supply and demand.

If you want to travel over the holidays, you pay the price. Being "perfectly fine with it" isn't part of the equation. It's their service, they can charge what they want for it. If you don't want to pay it, you find an alternative mode of transport.

Simples!

Taxi companies are pretty damned expensive to begin with, a rip off in fact, and no I won't use one. Yet on festivals, bank holidays etc people seem fine with the fact that most double their prices, if not more.

I wouldn't go to a shop to buy something and expect it to double in price, I wouldn't expect to get the bus to double in price, nor petrol for a bank holiday. The argument that these drivers are working the holidays for your convenience is nonsense, they only do it because of the fare increases.

What I mostly don't understand is why people pay it. Why is that? And would you?

I know there are a few taxi drivers on here, how do you justify doubling your already expensive rates?

Well as sum1 who works part time for my cousin's company, i'l explain it in dumb terms:

If you worked a bank holiday would you expect time in hand, double pay etc, even if you come back with sum rubbish excuse like no i dont work etc then i have news for you 80% of the working population get paid time off, double time or time in lue for working holidays.... Taxi drivers get nothing so we need to work harder and on days when nobody wants to work

So why should I work for less money on a day hardly any1 uses taxi's (xmas day) missing out on spending time with my little one just to carry your drunken abusive a$$ around all day..... if you dont like it Catch the bus oh wait they shut down.... Oh well walking it is!

New years day is time and half (not double) meaning for every £1 you spend you pay and extra 50p, if every taxi driver had normal money who would want to work that nite? yeah no1, how would you get home then? EXACTLY.

On top of that Jan is the deadest month of the year and most full time drivers rely on xmas wages to even get by, pay mortgages, food cloths for kids.

So i suggest in future you take the above in to account b4 you start throws harsh words like that about.

Nobody holds a gun to your head, As i say to every1 who moan's about it, if you dont like there's the door GTFO and walk.

EDIT: On the note you made about you dont spend doubt on shopping etc... no you dont but with respect think about it logically now, Xmas time is a time of year where shop's double there income soooooooooooooooooooo WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? the staff get double time ?

Mate all of what you've said is total bull!

Well actually no, I drive my own car instead. Or get a bus. Or infact anything to avoid paying a fortune to a rude gentleman who thinks he is a fantastic driver in a scabby Vectra.

Keep going, you are doing wonders at living up to the stereotype taxi drivers have.
