Im going to be getting Win7 soon, im currently using XP.
Do people still have to use firewalls and virus software (i use Avast and Zonealarm) or does Win7 cater for all?

I was using Microsoft Security Essensials, but it let some stuff in, so Im now using Comodo Firewall, Spybot, and NOD32 as my virus scanner. Using Firefox as my web browser, was using opera, but went back to firefox as I believe opera was also something to do with things getting in.

Seems to be a lot more secure now, not had anything for a week or two since changing.

I currently use Microsoft Security Essentials and Spybot Search & Destroy, I do a sweep twice a week for both spyware and viruses and don't really find anything getting through.

A lot depends on what kind of websites you visit as well.

How did you get them?

Do you have a router?

I've not seen a virus prompt for about 7 years on any of my own machines, not including one or two false positives

If you're behind a NAT router (basically any home router) you're protected from intrusions onto your network. The only reason you'd want a software firewall (above and beyond the Windows firewall) is to filter outbound traffic, which is pretty pointless anyway since malware can hook legitimate applications for internet access.

Bottom line if you're behind a router leave the Windows Firewall on and use a good free AV like Avast.

This.

Using avast on one machine and Microsoft security on teh other. will be switching both to MS security when I format in new year If I can get my hands on an ssd.

No idea where they came from, but I gained antivirus 2010 on my desktop, I was using opera at the time, so it could have come in via some pop up or something.
o2wirelessbox -> my pc, wired connection.

On a similar note, ive not had anything for a few years when I was running avast!,spybot and the standard windows firewall. So it might of just been bad luck.

Your router sounds fine, keep Windows firewall on, check the AV thread for a good antivirus (MSE is a good freebie) and keep your software up to date (Windows, Flash Player, Adobe Reader etc)

However all of the above can be undermined by downloading and installing software from untrusted sources (pirated applications and games, key generators, cracks etc. etc.)

i use router and windows firewall, avast antivirus and malwarebytes anti-malware

never have any problems

Made yet another switch tonight, and Im thinking that this might be the one for me. Just installed Comodo Internet Securtiy, and CPU usage is down compared to MSE. Also comes with their award winning Firewall Windows Firewall doesnt block outgoing commenctions.

Just dont fall for their Pro Version. It costs 40 per year, for another service that allows their team to remotely fix PC problems. If you know enough to check forums or you can use Google, then that service is not needed. But the free Firewall and Anti-Virus is great.

Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall, and Linksys Router here - and most importantly, used in a combination with sensible internet usage - no problems.
