Hello all,

Finally getting rid of the faithful CRT and getting a flatscreen. Mainly used for SD TV, some HD, and possibly gaming but mostly TV.

Looking at the following models:

  • LG 42LH5000 (LCD)
  • Panasonic TX-P42X10 (PLASMA)
  • Toshiba Regza 42AV635DB
Opinons most welcomed! Looking to get it purchased and setup before Christmas Day!

Funny you should write this, Im in the exact same boat, except I am going to wait until after xmas to hopefully get some good discounts.

Im heading in to Comets this weekend to hopefully get a look at all 3 of those TVs in the flesh, assuming they stock them.

The LG got a 5 star rating from what hi fi and is available from several places at about £600.

The Panasonic has had great reviews but isnt full HD if that is important to you (may not be). The S10 is Full HD and £100 more.

With regards to the Toshiba, you can also get the top of the line "XV" model for £600, which is better specced than the AV model (although I know the AV model is on special at the rainforest place for a very attractive price at the moment).

The What hi fi review of the Toshiba is interesting - gives it a great review, then only gives it 3 stars? They say there are better TVs for the same money, but dont actually list any. Very strange!

Anyway Im interested to hear any other responses as I am in the same situation as the OP!

I've just got a 42LH5000 to replace my older LG LCD TV (can't remember model) as Curry's broke it when trying to fix it - the 200Hz isn't all it's cracked up to be IMHO, it does make a difference but I prefer it set to Off. The picture quality for SD and HD is superb and the black levels are pretty darn good too for an LCD - if I was being extremely picky then I'd say the viewing angles are not brilliant, most people won't notice it :) It's a cracking TV for £599 and What HiFi gave it 5*.

Well over the last 4 days I have done some in-store viewings of these TVs and a couple of others. I didnt look at the Panasonics too much as Im personally not looking for a Plasma panel.

1st visit was to Currys:
Currys had the LG 42LH4000 (slightly lower spec model) and the Toshiba side by side, playing some HD demo. It was no contest - the LG had a superior picture.

Comets: Comets had the Toshiba set up better and the picture was vastly improved over the the one in Currys, but I still felt the LG had the edge.

Richer Sounds just had the Toshiba, and again it wasnt set up well - the picture they were demo'ing was squiched up with bars on the side. Colours looked a little washed out compared to the Panasonic 37" that was next to it as well.

My decision at the moment is between the Samsung LE 40B650T2 and the LG 42LH5000. Both these TVs had standout pictures at every store I went to.

The Samsung may be a touch above your £600 limit, so based on what Ive seen, I think the LG could be the way to go for you.
