My dad is looking at new broadband deals and is interested in the talk talk essentials package @ £6.99 per month on an 18 month deal.

It comes with a 40GB download allowance.

My dads uses are pretty average. General surfing, BBC news video's, streaming internet radio (BBC) and iplayer. Along with the usual email and occasional uploading to a website, but only a few photo's now and then.

Would the 40GB be adequate?

Thanks,

Gil.

iplayer might rape it mind..

it's roughly 1.3 gb a day.. not that hard to hit tbh!

install firefox, with adblock plus and easylist

that'll stop any adverts from downloading (saving 50%+ bandwidth on many sites!)

Thanks guys.

I'm just checking with him now about how often he uses iPlayer. I suspect it'll be no more than a few programs per week.

If your worried he could be getting anywhere near the limit, install something like netmeter that can monitor usage and even project what your monthly total will be at the current usage rate.

it's worth doing the firefox/adblock thing, trust me :)

really worth doing for anyone on a 3g conenction

We are on talk talk here with 40gb cap, at the moment they are letting you go over it for free until they can offer a means for the user to view their upload/download limit.

It used to be an extra £5 for going over, you can also upgrade to 80gb a month for an extra £4.

My dad has a 20GB limit and has never hit it, he does a bit of iPlayer but not much.

As a guide I would say 30GB is more than sufficient for most 'normal' people i.e. those that just interface with the internet rather than doing bulk downloads (e.g. Steam) etc.

Definitely! I don't browse the internet without it. Live with it for a week, then try it with Ad Block Disabled, you'd be amazed at how ugly the internet looks.

Would talktalk be a good deal? Being on a non-LLU exchange I get a 50gb limit for around £27 a month at the moment.

If there is a better deal for a bundle around £30 a month with some unlimited at the weekend, I would love to know.

I was going to go for ADSL24, but hearing some very bad stuff about them, so my one and only option of a good non-LLU ISP has fallen by the wayside

Its great isnt it....:D

Since September when they brought in this essentially uncapped service, ive downloaded close to 400Gb....:p

How hard can it be to introduce usage stats?, i had that with Nildram nearly 5yrs ago...

Wont last forever though, so make hay as the sun shines so to speak.....

Yup lol

And if I'm right in what I have read on the talktalk forums they are lifting the 8mb cap to so will get the highest your line can take for free :D

Talktalk in my opinion is a very good provider, at the minute they have lifted the 40GB limit as they are unable to offer usage statistics to clients - however do be aware as they can pull up usage statistics at the Opal end of the network (currently only available to higher up Talktalk staff + Opal staff).

In time they will write a parser for the statistics and integrate it to make it viewable to customers. Also be aware that Talktalk do use DPI traffic management hardware and can/do limit traffic (based on current network usage).
