rage against the x-factor - Outcome: RATM is the Christmas Number One!

There are other routes into music if you've got talent. It's not difficult for anyone who wants to get into the industry to see that the show is a pop star manufacturing machine.

You don't go on that show purely for the love of music. You go on it to get rich and famous.

The X Factor is simply another route to achieve a similar means. I think it's ludicrous to condemn anybody that has success as a result of it as being 'only in it for the money'. Besides, who doesn't want to be rich and famous?

I've never bought any music via download before this.

However, all my music is bought on CDs and I'm in to this type of music, but I can see where you're coming from.

EDIT: By this type I meant "genre". Metal, whatever you want to call it.. and I already own 2 Rage albums and some Audioslave.

I also understand where dmpoole is coming from, but what I dont quite understand is why we can't stick a finger to Cowell and Co. Yes I dont expect the general population liking my music... but hell it's fun just having one of my all time songs in the running up against a Xfactor winner.
I never ever get sweeped up in internet protests, but this pressed a button with me, given RATM is one of my all time favourites. I can still remember the moment I "discovered them" while watching an old surfing video as a kid.

Me... I just want to be rich, not famous.

What is sad is that 100s of 1000s of people will be buying a single by a band/genre that they don't like just to make a protest.
If you really want to make a difference to the charts then buy your singles every week like I did when I was a kid (even though I bought singles that probably wouldn't get into the charts).
You all sit there protesting behind your keyboards but how many of you have actually bought singles from the main sites before?
It is very clear that the majority of people in this thread are download virgins.

I'm not sure that's a valid point. Not everyone is a muso and not eveyone feels so solidly the need to be so puritan about their reasoning. I'm not sure I see your reasoning for needing to diminish their actions or belittle them for having a bit of fun or because they in one way or another associate with the protest.

I think you're being a bit needlessly anal about the whole thing.

Just for the record, I do respect you for your love of music but I don't think that gives you grounds for a greater than thou approach to the subject.

But is it a fundamentally bad thing to want to be famous or adored by many?

Nope not at all, but I was just answering your question then... your reponse was not to any of my arguments :)

I just plain say: I hate pop and find it hilarious that a band I love might be in the running for Xmas number 1... something I wouldnt have expected or think woud happen in a milion years. It's an added bonus to see Cowell and Co sweat a bit

Save the old man pep talk, I was buying singles in my youth as much as the next man before downloading music was even considered. We're not all 17.

I don't really see it as being sad that people want to 'flick the bird' at the likes of Simon Cowell, I find it quite invigorating that so many people are willing to part with their cash whether they like the music or not, simply to make a point. It could be anything, a song, a movie... doesn't matter, the song is a means of people having their say. As it happens, I like the song, and I dislike Cowell/X Factor.

Win, win.

I wasn't really trying to show anything other than it seems odd that people want to take pot shots at those from x-factor who have had success. It doesn't make their fame or financial gains 'cheap' at all, rather it merely means that they have taken an opportunity to catapult in front of the public's eye and they had the charisma to succeed in doing so. Fair play to them I say!

I have bought two copies of the Rage single and I think it would be hilarious if they won, but I'm not going aim wrath at those who are involved in a programme that I could simply ignore if I chose to do so. Doing so just seems a bit '**** you dad, I won't clean my room!' to me.

I dont hate this "Joe" character. I never watch X-Factor or the read the red top's so X-factor doesn't infiltrate my life too much.

The limited songs I have heard from the last 5 winners I simply cannot disguinish anything between them.

True talent can be told apart e.g. Elvis, The beatles, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Diana Ross and The Supreme's, Elton John, 2pac, Jay-Z, Charlotte Church, Michael Jackson, Oasis, Blur, etc etc.

All of those artists added something to culture/music; they made a real impact and changed music.

X-Factor winners do not. They are good for a flash in the pan 6 month run and nothing more. I don't hate them but I do hate the X-Factor machine. X-Factor winners aren't the issue it's the music companies.
