Man nets £18 mill to sell his youtube movie rights

From what I read earlier, they have given him an £18 million budget to make a film, not to buy his video rights. Why would they pay that amount for something that has been done many times before (War of the Worlds, etc.).

They're basically paying for his skill and giving him a chance to make a full length, Hollywood movie.

That makes much more sense. If he did that for $300, I cant wait to see wht 18 million produces.

Saying that though a lot of the money will probably go on overpriced actors etc if Hollywood has anything to do with it.

Good on him. I'd love to be offered funding to make something like that. Also, its true what sanaxe1 is saying, the $300 figure is in reality irrelevant. The prior cost of all the equipment and the man hours they put it would raise the 'actual' budget far above that.

Hmmmm it's good. But if I was to offer somebody a £18 payout for the film it would be that fan made half-life 2 one that was on youtube a few months back.

Yeah there really needs to be a Half-Life film. Hopefully it wouldnt end up like most other game to movie conversions.

If they do come up with a half life film it needs to be dark and gritty like the dark knight, thats the only way they will do it justice, no wimping out and keeping it safe for the younger audience.

Looked like lots of ideas nicked from other films put together

Not sure why that is worth $18m to Hollywood

Avatar would have only cost $300 bucks too if everybody had worked for free and had begged loaners of equipment and computer time, frankly the whole 'it only cost $300 to make' is ridiculous as a comparison to anything made professionally.

That is awesome.

Total mix of Half Life, Transformers and WotW. (+ Independance Day of course)

No doubt Hollywood will ruin it though :p

What's that song, heard it in tons of films. Can't even remember the films now :p

Okay, we've got to talk about the 300 bucks here.
In fairness, if you look at the forum where the maker originally posted that video, you'd see he says the $300 was purely what they spent to shoot all the scenes live, in a day. Other people have simply taken the figure, ignored the circumstances and gone "OMG only $300!!!"

They've been having problems trying to work out how to copyright a crowbar for merchandising opportunities.

He hasn't been paid 18 million dollars though has he. Hollywood picked up his movie and now want him onboard as a director, he has been given an $18 million budget for a movie, its not hard cash in his pocket.

Not to put a downer, but unoriginal music and blair witch style shaking of the camera left me feeling it was a bit over hyped. I didn't think the CGI was "amazing". I've seen better. But for 300 quid or dollars, stunning.

i can totally see why they paid $18 million for him to make this film. The video has and will continue to recieve a lot of publicitiy because of how it was made, the cost, person etc. if it's made quick enough the film can easily have great success from the popularity it has already recieved. it looks to me like studios are currently looking for the next paranormal activity, and they feel this could be it

The video has only had 4.4 million hits though. Thats not a lot at all, there are videos of funny cats with 12 million hits.
