Managed to drop my iPhone 3Gs today and crack the glass on the touchscreen.

The phone still works fine, just the cracks are all over the screen. I don't have any insurance or what not and am going to carry out the repair myself, I just wanted to know if anyone had experience of this and knows a good place from where I can pick up the parts that I need.

Have a look at the teardown guides on iFixit.com (link)

They usually specify the part numbers and show you how easy it is to dismantle them :)

I buy a fair bit (too much) crap on ebay from China... it is cheaper and generally quite reliable for delivery but you have to wait usually about 2-3 weeks for delivery. If you want it sooner then suggest paying a little extra for a UK vendor. No guarantees though that the parts are genuine... I tend to think they are probably not.

i would pay the money to get it properly repair from apple.
you could break the internal parts very easily if you not careful, the stuff inside is so fragile.

It's not too difficult to fix - but word of warning, the glass is ridiculously awkward to remove... takes quite a bit of time.

i Put a crack in the corner of my lcd when i tryed the tear down, the seal between the touch panel and the lcd is tight. take your time as its all over in second if you get it wrong!

It's a very easy repair, I've repaired three phones now - my own and two friends. I use a heat gun to get the glass off.

You'd have to be pretty slack handed to break anything.
