Another day, another problem with the ST24...

Started it up, revs rise to a healthy 3000 RPM as normal, then start dropping down to a fast idle, and down... and stutter... and the engine stops.

Tried starting it several times, each time the same. The engine seems to die faster if you press the accelerator (ie, that pedal has the complete opposite of the desired effect), which to my 'non-mechanical' brain doesn't make any sense!

I thought it best to record what happened on about the 4th occasion to illustrate the problem.

What do you suppose is wrong?

It is indeed.

Generally it'll be right next to the air filter - leave the sensor in place and just unplug it.

Some cars wont start at all, some will run fine without it. Generally the engine warning light will come on if you run it like that for about 20 miles or more, but as it's a starting problem that shouldnt be an issue

Had a look in the fault-finding section of the Haynes book and I found a couple of things.

I've had this on and off the last few days:
Engine hesitates on acceleration
Worn, faulty or incorrectly-gapped spark plugs
Vacuum leak at the inlet manifold or associated hoses
Blocked injector/fuel injection system fault

Now I've got:
Engine starts, but stops immediately
Loose or faulty electrical connections in the ignition circuit
Vacuum leak at the inlet manifold
Blocked injector/fuel injection system fault

Couple of similar items there. Sorry to be a complete thicket but I can't find Mass Airflow Sensor in the index, what section would it be under?

Thanks - I'll give that a try. I've gone off the idea of going out now, but would be nice to know what's wrong with the car! :)

The big black box on the right is the air filter housing - the sensor between that and the flexible banjo hose, with the plug on top of the pipe, is the MAF sensor

The car won't even start now. It just turns over and doesn't fire. Which is precisely what it was doing two weeks ago when the RAC had to drag it to a garage and the fuel pump was replaced. :(

New fuel pump again by the sounds of it!

Do Fords have pap pumps or something? Lots of people on here have had failures in the cold :(

I shall try again in the morning. No doubt the door will fall off or some other fault will develop...
