Just seems mandelson has out done himself this time, bet that summer trip with his music industry buddies helped, no bias there.

Village hall dances and other charity events face a new £20 million tax after Lord Mandelson scrapped an opt-out which allowed voluntary organisations to play music
Such payments have soared in recent years, following an aggressive campaign by the main licensing organisation, PRS for Music, formerly the Performing Right Society, which demands that licenses are obtained for any workplace where music is played on a radio, CD or cassette player.

Some shopkeepers have complained of being hounded with threatening letters demanding money when they haven't even got a radio or CD player in their store.

honestly what a country.....anyway why should the public pay to switch a radio on in a public place.
why dont the radio stations that are broadcasting certain music pay the massive charges ...either that or learn to play other royalty free music(im guessing thats ok to play).

They do. This is just another why to get more money.

How is it anything like a tax. It's a lincesne not a tax. Silly reporting

It's a massive shame and hopefully it wont get ratified.

Sound even worse than the TV license people.

And surely you don't need a license to play the ****ing radio? :/

Just seems to me that record companies just can't stop thinking up of ways to get money, what most annoys me is mandalson he works for labour and should be impartial yet this summer he was on holiday with some music industry buddies. this man should be kicked out of office replaced with a more moral individual.

Wups, wrong thread.

But seriously, radio? The whole point of which is to broadcast to the public for free on devices you can pick up for a matter of quid.

If you're playing it and others in the workplace can hear it, then you need a license. Its not just radio though (I don't think) its any situation where you're playing music out loud in your work, like a CD or whatever. Its pretty damn ridiculous.

Mandelson must be getting serious bribe money from the phonographic industry.

First the new law banning people from the internet for downloading music, and now this.

And yes, I am openly saying that he a corrupt piece of ****. This wasn't an accident, he isn't stupid.

 he is fairly and rightfully elected, If you do not know the ins and outs of UK politics then I suggest you read up on it before May.

Mandy is as rightfully elected as you. :p Dear boy, I suggest that you do some reading up as it may help you to cast your vote. ;)
