Just to confirm - it's very important to only charge your battery when it is completely flat as part charges reduce the usable capacity. It's called the memory effect and some types of batteries are far more prone to it then others

No, this is wrong. for NiCd batteries it's partly true, but you needed multiple partial discharge + Charge cycles to precisely the same amount to cause it.

Lithium Ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. specifically, lithium ion batteries lose capacity all the time, for numerous reasons: just sitting there, being charged, being discharged, being warm, being too cold etc.

ordinarily, (especially for things like laptops) it's best to discharge Li-Ion batteries as little as possible. obviously in a phone like this that's not really possible, but its a good idea to charge the battery whenever you have the opportunity.
the reason why a couple of full charge-discharge cycles are required to get the battery to it's highest capacity is because on a new battery, the charge/capacity monitoring hardware has not been calibrated yet, and fully charging, discharging and charging again ought to set this properly. it's probable that the batteries capacity monitoring hardware (i'll explain why it's there in a sec) thinks the battery has less overall capacity then it really has.

now, Li-Ion's have a tendency to just drop stone dead OR simply explode if they're discharged below about 3.3v (natural voltage is 3.7), and this happens when they're discharged all the way down. the batteries capacity monitoring hardware cuts the battery/cell off before this happens, but even with this safety-cutoff point, it's still unwise to discharge Li-Ions as far as they'll go because:

fully discharging a Li-Ion battery/cell WILL reduce total capacity, the amount varies on the temperature, speed of discharge and the age of the battery.
higher-speed discharge = more damage
older battery = more damage
higher tempetature = MUCH more damage.

there's a good reason why the BatteryLife Widget shows you the batteries temperature and voltage :)

that was for NiMH batteries, LiIon doesn't have a memory effect and fully draining them can damage them.

exactly :)

Took the plunge and ordered one :o

nice one Mate! i hope it arrives lickety-quick :)

niceone! should hopefully arrive tomorrow :D

make sure you charge it fully before turning it on, otherwise your first couple of discharge cycles will be very short indeed :)

oh yeah, but don't charge it from USB first because that'll turn it on :)

Will do....If i can resist :p Just got a £5 voucher to use also.

Can't wait! Is there any good apps i should know of?

Advanced Task Killer Free - for ending apps you don't want to free up memory. this is essential.
beebPlayer - app that allows you to watch access over either 3G or WiFi
chompSMS - a replacement for the default android SMS program, not essential, but the default one sends a message when you press enter, which is annoying.
Kaloer Clock - good free customisable desk-clock app
GPS Status - neat app that gives you your Co-Ords and compass heading, and all that, it's very cool to show off.
Meebo IM - a pretty good app for MSN-messenger
Ultimate stopwatch is a useful free timer/stopwatch program.
Note Pad - it's what it sounds like. a note-taking program.
Nav4All - a free satnav app that's pretty good
Ringdroid - allows you to cut'n'chop MP3 songs into ringtones on-phone.
handycalc - a free comprehensive calculator program, with graph function

It's here :p

Stupid royal mail website stating it had been delivered when it hadn't  Charging now and then will have a play :D

Loving the phone :D but 2 questions...Is there no official windows live messenger fr it? And how do i sync my hotmail e-mail? I tried to set it up but it doesn't seem to be working.

Hmmm.....Can't download anything from that marketplace which i have to pay for. Keep getting there were errors in the information you provided when entering CC details.

Did that shortly after posting and it worked.

Posting from my milestone :D

nice going mate!

a word of advice, Android's really developed to take maximum advantage of Google apps - i strongly recommend you get a Gmail account, they're genuinely better than MSN/Live accounts.

oh yeah, there's no official MSN client, but i think that Meebo IM is a good substitute

I've setup a gmail account as my main one. Some of the apps on the marketplace are class...arnie soundboard :D so far this phone has been amazing. 10x better than my htc HD. I'm finding the keyboard really easy to use also, a lot better than I was expecting.
