Hi guys i want to put a good cpu in my sons pc so which is better q6600 or q8200 for over clocking and for operating the system. will be for games and encoding work.

Will be pretty much the same in games/encoding at stock. Q8200 will run cooler, has better speedstep. The Q6600 has Intel VT, so you can run virtual machines/XP mode (win7)

The Q8200 will probably get better overclocking results.

You clearly don't have a clue.

The Q8200 has a 7x multi meaning limited overclocking headroom

The Q8200 has 4 mb cache versus the 8mb cache of the Q6600

The Q6600 is the better chip will overclock further (9x multi) and has double the cache.

Get the Q6600

Thanks guys i thought the q6600 mightbe better but its best to find out first.

Q6600 every time. Larger cache and a higher multi which means it performs better clock for clock and overclocks better too.

Assuming he gets a G0 stepping Q6600 that is :)

apps/benchtools like cinebench r10 take advantage of the newer SSE4 instruction set the e8200 has, that's why it tends to perform better with new apps clock for clock.
The difference is just not worth worrying about in reality though.

The q6600 g0's only real saving grace is of course its overclocking potential, if that is part of the opps criteria then it wins hands down.

chippy, just out of interest do you have a motherboard in mind?

I would remind you that OcUK is one of the more *friendlier* forums so it is at all possible can you try to be a bit more pleasant! :)

Lanz may not know as much as you about technology from two years ago so if you are a bit more patient and share your knowledge in a happier fashion I think it would be better for everyone!

Thats a pretty damn good board that! it has an 8-phase cpu power stage so it will have no problem supplying the juice to overclock a good Q6600, but reviews have shown that its maximum fsb limit for overclocking quads is quite a bit lower than dual cores.
People seen to hit an FSB wall at about 450-460MHZ with yorkfield quads on that board, although that pretty good its only going to get you to 3.2ghz with a q8200's extremely low 7 multiplier. The same FSB will get you to 4ghz with a Q6600 as the mb isnt the limiting factor as far as overclocking is concerned.
Get a good Q6600 G0 and you should easily get a great overclock.

The Q6600 is a nice chip but must be two years old now, if you pick one up used make sure you get a good price!

Thats it though, like any quad they command quite a price on the 2nd hand market, but if you can find a guaranteed clocker cheap enough its a no brainier! old or not its still a better option than a q8200 if overclocking is important.

Oh I'm sorry Wayne,

The op has just wasted his money by buying the inferior chip for his son.

Sometimes you just gotta state the facts. Give advice when you know its correct.

Making flippant statements are easy...wasting money based on the wrong advice is inexcusable.

So sorry lanz , with sugar on top you clearly don't have a clue.

Against slightly improved core 2 architecture from the 8200 and it all evens out to nothing worth noting.
clock is king in this case ;)
