Acer demos 120Hz LCD
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, December 20, 2009 - 10:48 PM

It seems that Engadget have gotten a taste of NVIDIA's 3D Blu-ray ecosystem on one of Acer's upcoming LCD beauties, the 120Hz NVIDIA 3D-ready 24" G245.

" We recently got a chance to check out NVIDIA's 3D Blu-ray ecosystem, and while we're sure we'll be all 3D Blu-ray'd out by the time CES is over, it was our first chance to see the new tech in action, and it seems pretty raring to go. Specifically we got to check out a movie film (we can't say which for legal reasons) on a fancy new upcoming Acer LCD (the 24-inch G245, pictured above) that does 120Hz and can be synced with NVIDIA's 3D shutter-based glasses. The 3D looked just fine, on par with other movies we've seen from NVIDIA in the past, and close to what we've seen in theaters, with the exception being that this is being delivered on a backwards-compatible, consumer-friendly Blu-ray disc. 3D Blu-ray is encoded in a new MVC-AVC format, which passes through a regular 1080p video for incompatible hardware, but provides a 3D image for the software and decode hardware capable of sussing it out. Right now NVIDIA's 3D Blu-ray capable on existing GeForce GT 220 and GT 240 GPUs, along with its upcoming Fermi cards due next year. Software is even more plentiful, with Arcsoft, Core, Cyberlink and Sonic all promising to by ready for 3D Blu-ray titles when they start shipping next year. Once the 3D Blu-ray spec is formally announced we're sure the floodgate will open even wider, but for now it seems NVIDIA has a nice jump on the tech, and we're sure they wouldn't mind pocketing a few of your gaming dollars in the meantime ".

Cant wait for 24" and higher displays that do 100 > hz. i wonder what the price of these displays will be!

Well, I hope a good screen does come out fairly early next year that's good for gaming and Blu-Ray, as im building a really good system next year, round about june july and i`ll want to purchase a high quality screen to go with it too.

Here is a link to the full specs for this screen over at guru3d.com forums.

Personally, im disappointed it only has a resolution of 1920×1080.

I would have preferred it to have a resolution of 1920x1200, but i take it this isn`t such a bad problem
when used for gaming and waching movies and for general usage???

I don`t know much about screens but the reason my I commented the above in my post is because
many people seem to recommend and like having a resolution of 1920x1200 for some reason.

I take it there`s nothing wrong with having a resolution of 1920×1080 for gaming and waching movies and for general usage???

basically you loose out on height of screen from what i can tell, ive seen 1920x1080 and i dont like it, it looks wrong for everyday pc use, fine for films, but i prefer 1650x1080 for everyday pc use or 1920x1200 would be much better for pc use, imo.

I'm pretty sure the reason its 1920x1080 is because that is pretty much the maximum that the dual dvi can handle @ 120hz, and 1920x1200 is just out of reach.

Seems unlikely theres going to be any 120hz 1920x1200's at any point soonish if they keep with the same socket.

whats wrong with tn

Worse colour gamut when compared to VA/IPS type panels, also viewing angles.

Didn't realise is was going to be £300, you get what you pay for, lets wait for reviews, response, input lag and such will be more important for gaming anyway.

It's not bandwidth limited. Dual link DVI has a bandwidth 7.92 Gbit/s (330MHz pixel clock), 1920x1200@120Hz only require 7.39 Gbit/s (308MHz pixel clock)

It's only about cost. The industry has switched to producing LCD slabs almost exclusively for 16:9 formats, cutting 16:10 panels from those slabs creates a lot more waste, and more expensive panels.

seems to me that if people will run eyefinity 1080p is a better answer for most. ok i also dislike the lower screen height.. but buy a bigger screen and reap the benefits in frame rates from the 700,000 less pixels

...*sigh* at the TN hate.

If you're gaming, you want TN's fast response rate since you're not bothered with colour matching or viewing angles. For colour-accurate work, of course you must pick PVA/IPS. PVA is pretty dire for gaming, and IPS is just too expensive for most people, especially when combined with 120Hz.

Each technology has its own slice of the market.

Hurray! common sense prevails!

What makes PVA poor for gaming?

I'm running an OcUK Digimate VA panel and I game loads, not and any issues tbh.

It's just something people say who have TN panels. :p

Personally, I can't stand using TN screens for anything more than casual usage.

Games/movies/general usage etc looks so much nicer on a PVA panel for example.

Gaming wise, a lot of people are somewhat "full of themselves" and think they're so good at gaming, and they need the best.

"TN is a must for gamers" is just nonsense that people have been forcefed and now just accept as fact without question.

I find a non-tn lcd pretty unplayable for fps games though :( perhaps i'm in the minority though.
