Need something for the Mrs, max budget £6K. Something reliable and cheap to run. Currently looking at the post 06 Yaris 1.3 T Spirit. Will involve motorway travel.

Whats the verdict on these cars?

Any opinions are much appreciated !

Excellent small cars, but I can't help but feel a) 6k is a lot to spend on one and b) it's the wrong car for motorway travel.

Something more Focus sized would be more appropriate

Feedback from my mother on her 08 Yaris is that it feels unseatled on A Roads/Motorway travel. In fact she says her 03 Punto felt more planted!

Just something to bear in mind you know what Women are like, just make sure she gets a good test drive on suitable roads!

I have to say for a small car I think a Yaris is one of the best. Practical, the 1.3 goes well, they do well on the motorway for what they are, reliable, well made. But if you're commuting on the motorway or whatever, you'd want something bigger

The opposite's true. The current shape Yaris is fine for the motorway as far as small cars go. The Punto on the other hand is really isn't nice at all - noisy, unrefined, a lot of vibration going through the car, and it tends to wander.

There really isn't an issue with a modern small car feeling 'unsettled' on the motorway. I've had a current shaped Micra 1.2 at a constant 100mph on the motorway and it feels completely planted.

Cheers for the opinions guys, I was also looking at the post 06 (new shape) honda civics but they are way over budget..

It needs to be an automatic which leaves out diesels, I guess small petrols are the way forward

Like I said feedback from my mother. (So female and a bit older).

So by all means you may be right. But still worth making sure you include some NSL roads on a test drive no?

There are no words

Ha! I actually like the Micra. My parents have one (their second) and I drove it extensively when they first got it. Really good around town - light controls (you can twirl the steering with your finger!), high seating position, good visability, keyless entry, people don't try to race you (unlike my BMW), people let you into gaps (unlike my BMW), more parking spaces available (unlike my BMW) etc. It's that bubble shape that does it. I drove from London<>Leeds ragging it the whole journey and its was very solid on the motorway - doesn't float, wobble or follow cambers at all. Tracks very 'true'. Obviously handling is non-existent but you don't buy car like that for its handling. Only downside was the engine which was obviously underpowered (though it felt 'peppy') and noisy when ragging it.

The only downside I found with the Yaris was when they changed to the new model, they also changed the type of seats they used and on a long journey they were not comfortable.
I had the old type of Yaris which was absolutely reliable, so I brought the new shaped one and on long journeys I got backache, so after having it for 8 months I sold it.

Personally I'd say check out Micras. We had one new in 2003 (the new style), mum had it for 20k miles then I passed my test in it and did 60k miles before changing to the MX5.

must have been the hardest 60k miles in micra history, 5 days out of 7 it would be taken to the redline from cold being a typical teen just passed my test and then ragged constantly to keep up with other cars (was only the one litre). After all that the only problem we've had is a fuseable link went (£40) and it now has a slightly rattly cam chain but there is nowhere near enough power in the engines to jump a tooth.

GOOD CARS!

my dad has a Yaris 1.0 gls. It's got nice velour seats. Bit underpowered, 1.3 would be good. Great economy though ... 48mpg. In 8 years of ownership from new it has had 1 engine fault - traced to 1 faulty spark plug, and it has also blown a couple of interior lights.

nice and reliable .. very cheap motoring.

Jap cars are always more expensive and for a good reason, they are bombproof. Had my Yaris 3 years and nothings gone wrong and its an 02 plate.

Really? Mate of mine had the previous gen Yaris and the central locking failed, then the dealer managed to fit the part for a different age of yarris and tried to send him home with it like that while they got the right bit in. His car wouldn't lock.

And as for folding the front seats to get in the back, my 1993 Uno had a vastly superior mechanism.

£8k about 4 years ago for a 1.3 hatchback without air-con, which like any other car on the market went wrong.

This will probably be a deal breaker, anyone else have the same issues with the post 06 models?

Really confused now!

I have had a new Yaris for the day on numerous occasions whilst the Avensis has been in for service. On each occasion I have done 200-500 miles mainly on the motorway. As a runabout it is a nice little car but on the motorway it is the most hateful thing I have had to drive, and is bottom of the list below the Punto, Bravo, Fiesta, Astra, Focus, a-class and any other car I have owned/hired/borrowed.

The car doesn't feel planted on the motorway and suffers heavily in crosswinds. The car has to be "held" in a straight line as the steering is to light it will happily drift out of the lane if you so much as move your arm. I found it a very fatiguing car to drive long distance, and have now started getting my car collected from home for services to avoid having to have a Yaris for the day.

Wife has an 05 T Sport (so it's the 1.5) but it's actually pretty nice.

Goes well, built reasonably well, handles nicely, overall a decent enough car.

I own a 51 Yaris T sport and if you are wanting to use a Yaris for the motorway then I would get the d4d. You'll get better mpg than the 1.3.

heres a few
