I've currently got Sapphire X1950 Pro which is overheating all the dam time (firmware problem apparently).

Can't really be bothered to flash or go with an after market cooler and am totally out of touch with graphic cards.

Any recommendations in the stated price range (and opinions on % performance boost) would be awesome.

Thanks

Swings and roundabouts...

4890 has more grunt.
5770 is not that far behind the 4890 in the grunt department but is cooler and uses less power, it's also DX11.

And if you come into a little more money later on you can put two 5770's in Xfire which will give you some GRUNT!:

OOps sorry, went away from the PC to make a drink and he has gone with the 4890.

Please ignore! :o

Personally I would go for the 5770, purely for the low power usage and how cool they run. I play MW2, completely maxed out with 4xFSAA at 1920x1080, and it's silky smooth (I mean SILKY!). They really are phenominal cards on a budget and it absolutely trashes my older 4850, which was a fantastic card in its own right. I've also seen that the 4890 is slightly quicker, BUT the 5770 slows down much less with huge explosions etc. That is something that almost everyone overlooks, thinking that framerates>all.
Edit: I see you already bought the 4890, still a fantastic card, enjoy mate you will see a HUGE boost in performance :)

That's why you take an average frame rate count not just the maximum ;)

depends on the rest of the spec of the machine.
if your cpu liimited then.. well you wouldnt see much differance between a 4870 and a 4890 if you catch my drift (only @ very high res)

Agreed Hesky, I was just pointing out though that the 5xxx series handle DX9/10 special FX much better than the 4xxx cards, meaning that the higher frame rates on them don't count for a lot :)

Thats a great card choice mate(not biased at all of course)and you should see a huge performance leap over your previous graphics card. Merry Xmas and enjoy.:D

great card. I know several people with 4890s (couple with the exact same card, most with other brands) who blast through just about every game one max settings with full AA, so should serve you well :D
