James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

May be a silly question, but will the blu-ray/dvd release work in 3D with glasses? Or is it the projection technology, rather than the filming technology, where the 3D is 'made'?

Pretty sure it won't. Not until 3D tv's around. I never want to see this in 2D, quite want to see the making of/commentaries though.

I can't find the source right now but it's being released in about 6 months on 2D bluray with a little extra content (10 mins extra running length I hear?) then later as a 3D bluray.

We'll all need a new 3d-compatible TV or projector and those are only just starting to trickle into the market. Unless you already have an nVidia 3D vision setup in which case, Blu Ray 3D support is promised :D

Visually it is a stunning film, but i don't think i've ever seen another that is quite as boring. Literally nothing happens for the first 2 hours, and even afterwards its not that great to make up for it.

Honestly the first time i've felt like walking out of a cinema ...

It is a possibility, i've seen other films released in 3D on BD using the old school coloured glasses but i'm guessing they look awful still.

I havent seen it yet, but from all the other comments in this thread, it is fairly evident that the fact that they have viewed it in 3D is the big selling point. Were it not in 3D, I wonder what sort of ratings it would get.

This movie is already ranked in the top 25 on IMDB.

I just got back from seeing it, and thought it was great!

Even though I did enjoy it, the score was easily one of the worst I've ever heard, literally shocking.

I must say i didn't really notice it.

Until it got to the closing track by Leona Lewis, god whoever chose that should have been shot. I haven't left the cinema so disgusted by a closing song since the appalling choice of Take That for Stardust.

Looks like Cineworld in West swindon is only showing the 2D version :(

Also is it me, or is the plot vaguely derivative of the old Andre Norton "Janus" novels?

went to see this earlier, all in all.. pretty good film. the 3d didn't really impress me that much though? was just small things that added to the film, like bits of grass waving about and leaves flying towards you..

it was shot with one of the 3d cameras that has 2 lenses one for each eye and uses dual projectors acording to a wiki

Good film, found the plot very predictable and cliche but enjoyable none the less. I think I'd have enjoyed it more without the 3D aspect as wearing glasses for 3 hours really gets on my nerves.

7/10 from me

Indeed, So long ! Towards the end where its all a bit voodoo yahoo, I kinda thought Jesus get on with it... but that was made up by the Final battle type scenes which were cool.

Im gonna try and persuade a few mates to watch it in imax uber scuba 3d style now, i cant imagine just how much better it is.

It's more or less vaguely derivative of, like, Everything, apparently. I'm off to see it tonight!

But is it me, or is there more than a hint of Link, Zelda and, er, the Great Deku Tree in there?

Avatar for me felt like watching a very good disney movie, with added grandness and realism. If you want a completely original movie then go somewhere else, however if you want an emotional and fun journey that WILL sweep you away to another world, then Avatar is better than anything that came before it.

I just think too many people have preconceived ideas about what a movie should be and dont allow themselves to experience the intended vision. Personally I thought Avatar was the best movie of the decade by a long shot, but then again, I think this decade has been awful for cinema. The decade of comicbook heroes and hashed remakes.

That covers a lot of genres and is a long period (The Matrix is nearly in it for example)... For this sort of genre (scifi/fantasy) I'd personally have to say the LOTR films for example are a far more complete/interesting experience.

If Avatar had a stronger script it could have hit the ball out of the park. As it was, it was still good though :)

However IMO Avatar did what it set out to do in as much as set a new bar for what we will come to expect visually from cinema. I saw it last night in 3D and thought it was great. The CGI realisation of Pandora was excellent I thought, and I can't remember thinking to myself "that scene was so obviously CGI". The colour palette was amazing too.

Comparing that to e.g "2012" and they were light years apart in terms of visual quality.

Having re-listened to Mark Kermode's thoughts on 3D, i actually now completely agree with him on it. It doesn't add anything to the film itself and it is just as good in 2D ( i did take the glasses off and watch it in out of focus 2D, the 30% increase in brightness is much better).

Until they figure out a way to use 3D without the need to wear glasses and completely remove the extra charge (which granted has started to roll out), then 3D will definitely not be the future. And i do agree with people above about the genres, which again confirms why 3D will not be standard. Sci-fi/fantasy and animation are really the only two genres that can get away with it.

In that case, I'm not sure what I have the bigger issue with. His opinion on 3D, or his hair style...
