Hello everyone, i hop you all have a great christmas!

I was just curious to know how fast the i7 is at stock? Is it still Very quick?Reason being, ive ordered a new setup 4 xmas , and i didnt have enough to get the aftermarket cpu coller so im gunna have to stay at stock speeds untiill then. Is it woth overclocking the i7 in the meantime on the stock heatskink, and if so what speed is acceptable I.E, the right temps.?

oh yea also, can someone explaion the turbo mode, and the extreme mode in the bios, and the diffrences between them both!

cheers!

Yeah the i7 at stock will beat the i5. Its an incredible chip even at stock speeds, theres really no hurry to OC. Stock speeds are suprisngly fast. Just remeber to change the power settings in windows and turn off power saver mode.

Depends what game its is. Modern Warfare 2 for example: there shouldnt be any difference. i7 is great even running at stock speeds. You will only notice if encoding large video samples or during encoding.

Just set to High Performance, Or Make a custom power profile and set processor speed to maximum.:)

Speedstep... But its bad advice, the CPU will jump to full speed as soon as necessary anyway, there may be 1 or 2 ancient games which have issued with speedstep, but in practice virtually no application will have any problem with speedstep turned on, and it will save a lot of power if your simply web browsing.

Speedstep also may kick in if for example your you have Vsync enabled and the cpu has nothing much to do.

World of Warcraft for example on my rig, go someplace quiet, with simple graphics, and it sits solid at 60FPS, and speedstep kicks in dropping the cpu to around 1.8ghz or so, go to a busy place such as Dalaran city, and the cpu jumps back to 3ghz right away.

It's ultra quick to restore full speed when needed, I believe its a single clock tick.

Speedstep saves power, and has 0 impact on performance in the vast majority of games and applications. The only time when turning speedstep off is if you tinker with the multipliers on a Core 2 processor, its said that some Core 2's will really stubbornly refuse to be stable at for example 500mhz + the x6 multiplier of speedstep.

To cut to the point, if its stable with speedstep, then leave it on, and save a few watts, and help your carbon footprint :P
