So, for the last 10 years or something silly my family have been using the same old pc. Its stupidly slow and really annoying for my mum now she has found facebook and now that my dad has realised there is such a thing a pc gaming.

want it to be rather cheap, preferable no more then £600. this is what i have come up with, with future plans to overclock when money can be found for a new HSF etc.

do you think this is reasonal for the money? or have i missed something?

Ditch the cheapo gigabyte board for this Asus, the Gigabyte one has a strange choice of connections on the I/O (old legacy stuff ie parrallel port, com port etc).

I've cut the hard drive space in half as 500GB is enough for the time being.

I have also added a far better video card though and an aftermarket cooler to let you get the best out of that i5,

and the Corsair 550 watt psu will be more than enough juice. :)

they need the i5 because they would be using this new pc for as long as they can, they dont plan to upgrade after this has been bought, so the i5 would fit the bill for future proofing imo, i thought the same thing about the mob but couldn't get the price down to afford it enough, the only problem at teh moment is that they really do need the 1TB space, so cutting down to 500gb isn't really an option.

oh and i dont like amd and ati, i know it is slightly immature to just cut two such companies away, but from my experiance the parts they make that are meant to match other products on the market have just not been able to pull their weight.

thanks for the spec's though guys, if anyone else has any better ideas or anything to add, i would be greatful for the input =]

Indeed a rather silly excuse for not getting better performance and value, but it's your decision. :p

So ok go with my spec but stick with your GTS 250, and with the saved money get the 1TB hdd. ;)

well a friend of hers was showing her an amd based system with an ati card he has and i was very unimpressed. my old q6600 was faster then this tri-core he had even though he insisted it was better in super pi, extrating rar files and other things it just felt slower, and ati wise that last 2 build i have done for people i used ati cards, the last one was a 4850 and i was very disappointed when that card was beaten by an old 8800gts. from experiance i have had so far with either company the product has not matched all the hype i read about them online.

thank you though, your spec did help and i have changed the spec around now to get what i think is best for the money and my parents =]

How many genders does your friend have? Anywho, obviously the Q6600 is better than a 720BE, but they're completely different price points. The 4850 is way better than the 8800 GTS so i don't know what you're talking about there.

the 4850 was getting considerably lower frame rates then the 8800gts 512mb, side by side system same cpu and all that jazz and was scoring lower, infact the computers are owned by 2 members on this forum :P so argue with me if you like, but i can read frame rates from fraps =]

I shall, the 4850 can beat the 9800 GTX in 90% of games with AA on, and since that's just an updated version of the same card there's no competition. It's probably better still than the 250.

Merry Christmas to you to. i guess i must just be an fool to think that when running benchmarks with the same settings and clearly reading that one card is a good 30 frames lower that infact means that its faster :P

moving on, have a happy new year and thank you for you input towards my parents new pc, you were the key element to getting my parents the best i can to try and brighten her day :)
