Hello!

I`m planning on buying a Laptop that has a Core i7 in it and with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics and screen size of at least 17" Inch with Full HD 1920 x 1080 or higher resolution supported.

In my search for a very good laptop, i have came across the ROCK Xtreme brand, so I was wondering what peoples thoughts on ROCK Xtreme brand of Laptops and are thay any good???

Currently from there Xtreme Range, they have models, Xtreme 840, Xtreme 840 Sli and Xtreme 790.

A Core i7 in a laptop has to be downclocked and undervolted so much that you're better off having a decent dual core. You sound as though you want it to do desktop work in a laptop - so just get a desktop.

Er no they aren't. The Rock i7 is the same Clevo D900F that you can find from many different resellers which has a desktop i7 processor, not downclocked or undervolted. There are other rather better and far cheaper people to buy a Clevo from in the UK than Rock.. they have fallen a long way down in the last few years.. their forum has been full of complaints for a long time. I think a few people have recently bought Clevo's from other places.. they might have some suggestions.

To make i7 laptop viable they had to massively drop the voltage - which means you get speeds like 1.6gig... I've not looked at benchmarks compared to core 2 laptops but its probably still not slow.

280m GTX is essentially a desktop 250GTS to all intents and purposes so it will struggle a bit with 1920x if you try to play max detail with lots of AA.

The ROCK Xtreme brand with Core i7 maybe is way over kill in hardware and price for what i want to use the laptop for.

The laptop will be getting used for Full Blu-Ray/HD movie viewing, a bit of gaming with the latest games so the cpu and graphics card needs to be quite powerfull, at least 4Gb of fast memory, Blu-ray drive, good sized hard drive that has good performance, chatting with webcam, internet surfing, good wireless and bluetooth compatibility, long battery life that lasts lots of hours without needing be recharged, and has a screen size of at least 17" Inch with Full HD 1920 x 1080 or higher resolution supported.

I dunno if the i7 ones are any different but all the clevo based laptops I've tried have had really poor webcams... fortunatly not something I have a use for but a consideration if thats one thing your looking at.

You're refering to the mobile i7 cpu's. Rock only sell the Xtreme 790 with an i7 and it's the desktop version not the mobile i7 CPU.. so you get a desktop i7 920/ 950/ 975 cpu. They run at full speed, full voltage.

The new mobile i7 cpu's run at slower speeds (720QM all 4 cores run at 1.6GHz) but they ramp up the speed on load but drop cores. See here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/laptops/2009/11/13/intel-core-i7-mobile-720qm-benchmarked/1 If you want a gaming laptop the Kobalt G870 looks good.. if too much price wise look at a Dell or HP.

The laptop i`ll be buying won`t be replacing my desktop pc, so does anyone have any
recommendations on a laptop suited for my needs that i posted above in post #5???

Thank you for responding.

Battery life is going to be the toughy, you may need to make compromises based around that.

Check out the HP envy range (longer battery), or the Kobalt G860 (more powerful).

You also have the likes of the Dell Studios with I7, but the GPUs are much weaker than both.

As mentioned, I wouldnt bother with Rock. Both them and Alienware have long fallen from grace since 'the glory days'.

PS. Kobalt are meant to be having a website upgrade over xmas holidays so the site may been down until they come back, not sure, but just incase the site wont load.

I'm writing this on a Rock Extreme 770 at the mo. These laptops are incredible, but they are heavy!!! I use mine for when im at university and walking the 20 minutes to lectures with this on my shoulder everyday is a pain and I'm 6 foot 5 and played rugby for a good many years, I'm not exactly what some might call, petite. My right shoulder is now however, twice the size of the left!

I bought mine way back in September 2007 with a Core 2 Duo 2.2, since then ive added another 2 gig of RAM and its finally starting to struggle with my day to day tasks (Games Programming and Modelling especially) and playing the newest of games. It has an Nvidia 7950gtx M, pretty beasty back then, but now...not so much. The worst bit is I cant upgrade it.

Battery life isn't amazing, but if you stick it in power save mode you can get a good 2 hours out of it. Which means I have to carry around the beast of a power pack to keep it alive if i need to work on it for any length of time.

It will be perfect for everything you need to do above, and it'l do it well for a good couple of years. I just hope you have enough money to buy a new one when everything starts giving up on you.

I'm now building myself a new i7 desktop to replace this laptop. I dont think ill be buying myself another laptop to do what a desktop should again, foolish mistake if you ask me. I wish I had just bought a desktop instead and maybe a less powerful laptop later. But this is coming from a student with very little spare dosh.
